Y COMPROMISE?

It's a well-known fact that running two amps is not only enormous fun, but also a time-honoured way of achieving bigger tones on stage and in the studio. Whether it's switching between two different amplifiers for their individual characteristics (rhythm and lead, for example) or using them simultaneously for huge walls of sound, pros have been employing this setup for decades. Achieving this easily, however, has always been a problem for guitar players. Poor quality passive ABY boxes/line selectors load the guitar signal down, degrading the tone and rendering the whole exercise almost pointless. Not to mention ground hum issues caused by non-isolated outputs. On the other hand, active ABY pedals are in short supply and are usually quite cumbersome.

Step forward: The Amp Detonator.

Featuring two buffered outputs, one with a custom designed isolating transformer, we are pretty confident that the Amp Detonator is the smallest active, fully functional, buffered ABY pedal on the market. What's more, it's the only active ABY switcher that can be powered by a 9V battery. The transformer output has been meticulously engineered to be as transparent as possible, whilst both outputs are buffered with a low noise, linear circuit. Drive any length of cable to your amps with no loss of clarity and switch silently between them. No more unnerving "thumps" for you or the sound guy! The Amp Detonator also has a push-button polarity switch to correct common phase issues between amplifiers, keeping the tone fat and full. Finally, the tri-colour LED is a handy feature, especially on dark stages, indicating your current switching setting at a glance.

Buffered Isolated Outputs:

Driving long cables is no problem as the Amp Detonator's buffered low impedance signal ensures your input's upper frequencies are maintained. Output B features an isolating transformer which eliminates common ground loop hum when using two amps simultaneously. The transformer output has been engineered for maximum transparency, correcting some of the tone-altering characteristics that affect many other ABY boxes.

Phase Correction:

Two amps out of phase with each other sound awful but many ABY switchers ignore this. Even if the amps are in phase, running different pedal chains to each amp can reverse the polarity of the signal, causing the two signals to be out of phase when engaging both amps. The Amp Detonator addresses this with a simple fix on the top of the unit.

Power:

The only active ABY switcher that can be powered by battery as well as a 9 or 12V DC adapter. It also features an internal charge pump circuit which doubles the voltage internally to 18V, increasing the internal headroom for incredibly low harmonic distortion

Compact Design:

Need a professional ABY switcher but pedalboard space is at a premium? Other small amp switchers exist but none offer the quality or the functions of the Amp Detonator: silent operation, isolated outputs, phase switch, individual footswitches for A/B or BOTH and an oversized 10mm tri-colour LED - green for A, red for B and blue for BOTH.

Walking from Mexico to Canada with a great cast of characters
Format: Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Journeys North. The story is about the Pacific Crest Trail and the people who hike it (thru-hikers) attempting to walk from Mexico to Canada. The author brings the trail to life across the story, but what really stands out is the story of the characters. You find yourself rooting for them as they encounter all kinds of challenges, and you get to know them through their backstory and past experiences that are shared. People attempt a thru-hike for many different reasons, and the story is enriched by their personal stories and histories that they carry with them each step of the way. Even their “trail names” had stories that often highlighted something about the characters themselves. One of the unique things about the book is the Pacific Crest Trail itself, as the author’s descriptions allow you to imagine what it looked like and felt like (including the aches, pains, and injuries along the way). The trail is ever present across this story of the people who walked it, bring them together, and then pulling them away from one other, sometimes for weeks or even months. The trail and mother nature create for an everchanging backdrop as the characters navigate their way north. I am not a thru-hiker and I doubt I would ever attempt to walk from Mexico to Canada, but I enjoyed tagging along on the adventure of Scout, Frodo, Blazer, Dalton, Tony, Nadine and many others whose lives intersected over the course of many miles. I found myself having a hard time putting the book down, particularly as the hikers neared the Canadian border. If you are looking for an armchair adventure along the PCT, or wondered what it would be like to tackle a thru-hike of a long trail, or are curious about the people who undertake such a challenge, you will enjoy Journeys North! I would imagine that if you are a PCT hiker you would find the book even more meaningful.

Incredible Life experience while hiking the PCT
Format: Paperback
As I began experiencing great stories about the "Camino" pilgrimage in Spain, books about "thru hikes" in the US seemed to find me too i.e. The Pacific Crest Trail, and did grab my attention for various reasons... "Journeys North"-- To me, this story makes it more than apparent, that if you want to learn about yourself and open your "vault doors" so to speak, and free yourself of personal challenges-hiking the PCT could help. This book on it's own, is a wonderful treatise about the PCT, and taught me much about being open and honest with others to include oneself, and about being grateful." This story "rings" of Freedom, is intense, and at times, raw. From the comfort of my living room... Frodo, Scout, Blazer, and company drug this old backpacker (me) a.k.a. "LightningLayne" along on a fantastic journey north clear from Mexico's northern border to Canada's southern one. Along the way, I noticed how the "goodness" in people replaces just about every negative the world throws in your face. Finally, I laughed, I cried, and even felt sorry at times for all the "participants." In the end, I was "grateful" for the individual and collective stories shared. This story is one that has burrowed in deep and is one I will never forget.

A community 3 feet wide and 2650 miles long
Format: Paperback
One of the aspects of long-distance backpacking on our National Scenic Trails that those who haven't done so are generally unaware of is the tight-knit sense of community that binds hikers together, even hikers who've never met. These folks are average people with a vast range of life experiences and circumstances, and not simply a generic array of "professional hikers" involved in some sort of athletic competition. In the "real world," you can know someone for years without *really* knowing them at all, but on the trail, a single day can feel like weeks, and months can feel like years. You can bump into someone in the morning, and have a new "old friend," soulmate, or savior by the end of the day. In "Journeys North," Scout brings this community to life on the page vividly and emotionally, drawing us into not just his own life and experience, but of many others in his trail family- all making that journey north in a literal way collectively, as well as in their own personal ways figuratively. Along the way, he relates the highs and the lows of not just life on the trail, but of life in the "real world" as well. It's a crash course in empathy, determination, and sometimes just plain stubbornness. When I received the book and flipped through it quickly, I was at first surprised at the lack of photos- just a single page at the end with a handful of shots of the "main characters." But as I read the book, I quickly realized that Scout's richly descriptive prose paints a far better picture than any actual pictures could, and was grateful for the space he made for my imagination to play a part in his story. While no book could ever substitute for the actual experience of hiking a long trail, "Journeys North" serves as great inspiration for those who aspire to, as well as reassurance for their friends and family that they won't simply be disappearing into the wilderness alone.
