The Shimano PD-M540 Pedals sit in a well-established spot in the SPD lineup — an aluminum-bodied clipless pedal built around a chromoly axle and sealed cup-and-cone bearings, with a trimmer platform than its sibling pedals that keeps rotating weight down without sacrificing the durability MTB riders expect.
The retention tension is adjustable via a small hex key at the rear of the mechanism, so you can dial in release force to match your riding style — lighter for technical terrain where you're unclipping often, firmer for climbs and longer efforts where security matters more. The pedals ship with SM-SH51 single-release cleats, which provide 4° of float for natural ankle movement through the pedal stroke. If you prefer a more forgiving exit, they're also compatible with SM-SH56 multi-release cleats, which allow disengagement from multiple angles — useful on steep or unpredictable terrain. Available in black or silver.
