What Is the Catmint Plant?

The catmint plant is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is known for its drought tolerance and long blooming season.

Catmint Appearance and Characteristics

The catmint plant is highly ornamental, with its soft, gray-green leaves that are aromatic when crushed. Its most notable feature is the beautiful catmint flower, which blooms in shades of lavender and blue.

The plant has a spreading, bushy habit and can grow anywhere from 12 to 24 inches tall, depending on the variety. Its foliage forms a neat mound, and the flowers appear on upright spikes, creating a stunning display throughout the growing season. Planting catmint is a great way to add color to garden borders and walkways.

One of the unique qualities of the catmint plant is its ability to bloom over an extended period. It produces eye-catching blooms from late spring to fall, especially if deadheaded regularly. Catmint's longevity and resilience make it an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a plant that requires minimal effort yet provides lasting beauty.

Catnip vs. Catmint: What's the Difference?

Like catmint, catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a member of the mint family. Both plants can stimulate felines as they contain nepetalactone, which induces playful and euphoric behavior in many cats.

However, some cats seem unaffected by catnip but are drawn to catnip, and vice versa. The concentration of nepetalactone can vary between the two, which may explain different reactions. Individual feline sensitivity to this compound can also influence their preferences, as some cats are genetically predisposed to respond to nepetalactone while others are not.

The two plants share a similar fragrance, but catmint is more commonly used in gardens because of its decorative qualities and ability to attract beneficial pollinators. Catmint is also a practical choice for gardeners seeking a plant that is both beautiful and easy to care for.

Catmint Origins and History

Native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, catmint has been cultivated for centuries for its ornamental beauty and practical uses. Historically, it was used as a mild remedy for colds and digestive issues. Gardeners also relied on catmint for its pest-repelling qualities and ability to attract pollinators. Today, it is still appreciated for its ability to enhance a garden's aesthetic appeal and support pollinator populations.

Catmint Plant Care: Growing Tips

Caring for the catmint plant is straightforward, making it perfect for gardeners of all skill levels. Follow these catmint plant care tips to keep your plant healthy and thriving:

Light: Catmint plants thrive in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. For the best flowering results, give your plants at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

Temperature: These plants are hardy in USDA zones 3-8, making them suitable for a wide range of climates. They can tolerate both heat and cooler temperatures, performing well in various environments.

Soil: Catmint prefers well-draining soil but is highly adaptable. It can thrive in poorer soils, including dry, rocky, or less fertile areas. Its ability to survive in tough conditions makes it an ideal plant for gardens with challenging soil types.

Watering: Once established, catmint requires little watering. It is drought-tolerant and does well in dry conditions, making it a great choice for low-water gardens or xeriscaping. However, during particularly dry spells, deep watering may be necessary to keep the plant thriving.

Fertilizing: Catmint doesn't require heavy feeding. A light application of a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer in the spring will help promote healthy growth and vigorous blooms.

Pruning: Deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms throughout the growing season. In late fall, you can trim back the plant to maintain a neat appearance and prepare it for fresh growth in the spring.

Uses and Benefits of Catmint Plants

The catmint plant offers a wide range of benefits, making it a valuable addition to any garden:

  • Attracts Pollinators: The catmint flower is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, helping to support local ecosystems. Gardeners looking to create a pollinator-friendly environment will find catmint to be a perfect choice.

  • Deer and Rabbit Resistant: One of the plant's practical advantages is its resistance to deer and rabbits. These animals tend to avoid catmint, which makes it a low-maintenance plant in areas where wildlife might otherwise be an issue.

  • Deters Pests: Catmint is also a great insect deterrent, especially against aphids and Japanese beetles.

  • Drought Tolerant: Once established, catmint is highly drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for gardens in arid regions. Its ability to thrive with minimal water makes it ideal for xeriscaping and low-water garden designs.

  • Versatile Garden Use: Whether along garden borders, in rock gardens, or as ground cover, catmint adds vibrant color and soft texture to any garden setting. Its ability to spread and fill gaps and spaces also helps suppress weeds, providing a natural and attractive ground cover option.

  • Natural Companion Plant: Catmint pairs well with various other plants, making it an excellent companion in mixed garden beds. For instance, its soft, flowing form complements bolder perennials like daylilies, roses, and echinacea.

  • Traditional Herbal Uses: Historically, catmint was brewed into teas to help with mild digestive and respiratory issues. While it is no longer commonly used for these purposes, its history as a traditional medicinal herb appeals to those interested in herbal gardening.

Multiple perspectives and fascinating battle plans
Format: Hardcover
D-Day: The World War II Invasion that Changed History by Deborah Hopkinson is a non-fiction book about the events of D-Day. This was an invasion of allied troops onto four German occupied beaches. It took months of painstaking planning and coordinated efforts of multiple nations to pull of this heroic feat. D-Day is widely considered one of the most important military efforts in history. This book does an amazing job of bringing a pivotal point in human history to life. It shows the perspectives of military commanders, journalists, world leaders and soldiers, which allows the reader to become immersed in the story of D-Day. The book was divided into 6 main parts that covered events before, during, and after D-Day. Within these parts, there was numerous other sections, like “Invasion Briefings” and “Reporter’s Notebook.” This broke up the information and made it easier to understand. My favorite aspect of the book was the invasion briefings. As a World War II buff, it was fascinating to see the intricate maneuvers involved with each invasion, and how different units worked in unison. The labeled maps, captions, and diagrams made the information very accessible. Each of the four beaches (Sword, Juno, Omaha, and Utah) had separate invasions that defied the tremendous odds against them. The Allied troops braved beach obstacles, enemy fire and terrible weather, sacrificing everything for a common goal. I also loved how this book displayed the bravery of those behind the scenes during D-Day. Though they were not present on the battlefield, thousands of people worked to build machinery, predict the weather, and plan the invasion. If President Roosevelt had picked the wrong day to invade, the entire D-Day operation may have been for nothing. But under extreme pressure, Roosevelt rose to the occasion and picked the right date. I think he said it best: “I thank the gods of war we went when we did.” I would recommend this book to any reader over the age of ten who enjoys history and reading about World War II. I believe that the best and worst of humanity can be witnessed in wartime situations, and reading about prolific wars is very important. Such a momentous event like D-Day should be appreciated by readers old and young. I give this book five out of five stars because of the multiple perspectives and fascinating battle plans. This book did justice to the importance of such a pivotal point in our history, and was simply a great read. Review by Anya A, age 14, Metropolitan Washington Mensa

Couldn't Put it Down
Format: Hardcover
Hopkinson takes a huge and complex historical event and somehow manages to explain the overarching purpose and events without ever losing sight of the individuals who made it happen. Terrifying, riveting and satisfying in equal measures. Great for young people who want to know more about seminal events (especially ones their relatives may have lived through) and for adults as well. Highly recommended.

Other Words for Home
Format: Hardcover
Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga is a book that has melted my heart. From the moment I picked up this verse novel, I was engrossed in the story and the courage of the characters.  Jude, the main character, is a young girl from Syria. Her family has been separated by the unrest and violence in her country. To keep Jude and her mother safe, Jude's father has sent them both to live with an uncle in America. Life in America is challenging and scary. Jude is finding herself continually heeding her brother's words to "be brave." Taking his words to heart, Jude holds her head high as she starts school in America, meets new friends, and tries to find a balance between her life in America and her life in Syria. She even emulates his example and makes the choice to audition for the musical at her new American school.  Other Words for Home is a modern-day story of immigration and bravery. It tells the story of one young girl's desire to start her new life in America while she still honors the family and life she left behind in Syria.  It hits on the struggles of fitting in, learning a new language, and the realities of racism and intolerance that happens even here in America.  As I was reading Other Words for Home, I got lost in the poetic words that just flowed from the pages. They were melodic and entrancing. Jasmine Warga has a talent that I would put right up there with other verse novelists, such as K.A. Holt and Kwame Alexander. The verse novel structure was done with perfection, and it was a beautiful asset to Jude's story.

I wrote Jude for my twelve-year-old self, who never saw a brown girl in a book who was proud of her family and where she came from. A brown girl with hopes and dreams of her own.” The voice Jasmine found for her main character, Jude, is astonishingly authentic, wonderfully observant, and filled with love and hope and strength. Jude’s voice combined with the free verse blew me away for its lack of pretension, naturalness, and profound beauty. I was worried that the free verse would feel forced, especially coming out of a twelve year old’s mouth, but instead it’s surprisingly organic and easy to read. ⁣ ⁣ This is a Syrian refugee story that reveals what should be obvious: that refugees want what everyone wants: to be happy, to be safe, and to be themselves. ⁣ ⁣Jude’s story is told with humor and heart and understanding and joy. It’s possibly my favorite book I’ve read so far this year.
