Origin

This plant is not a pure botanical species, but a hybrid with genetic origins in Vanda coerulea, combined with other selectively crossed Vandas. The suffix "SS1" stands for "Selected Strain 1," a designation used by breeders to indicate that this is a specific, selected clone line or growth form. This line is chosen based on color intensity, flower size and flowering richness.

Characteristics

What distinguishes this SS1 clone from the more common Blue Magic-types is its remarkably full flower cluster, relatively short leaf position (making the plant grow more compactly) and extra long flowering time. The flowers are large, round and symmetrical with a deep blue-lavender color that looks almost metallic under certain light.

Unlike the natural species Vanda coerulea, which occurs wild in northeast India and Thailand, this hybrid has a more streamlined growth form and flowers more easily under cultivated conditions. The Vanda coerulea typically has slightly smaller flowers with a softer, powder blue color and a looser inflorescence. Care

Light

The Vanda Blue Magic SS1 likes very much light, but avoid direct midday sun behind glass to avoid leaf burn. A bright windowsill facing east or west is ideal.

Temperature

This orchid thrives best at daytime temperatures between 21 and 30 °C and should not fall below 15 °C at night.

Substrate

This plant prefers to grow without substrate, hanging, so that the roots can breathe freely. Optionally, you can use coarse bark in a basket for extra hold, but this is not necessary.

Humidity

A high humidity of at least 65% is desirable, but preferably a bit higher, especially in warm periods. In drier areas, you can mist daily or use a humidifier.

Nutrition

Use a special orchid feed for Vandas with low nitrogen content (type "bloom booster") once a week during active growth, diluted to a quarter of the recommended dosage.

Watering

The Blue Magic SS1 should be misted several times daily with lukewarm, demineralized water or clean rainwater. Especially at high temperatures, water may even be poured over the roots. Afterwards, allow the roots to dry thoroughly in between sprays before watering them again. High humidity and good air movement with it is most important with this species.

Flowering

This hybrid can bloom several times a year under the right conditions, with flower stalks sometimes bearing as many as 8 to 10 flowers. Flowering lasts for 4 to 8 weeks.
