Discover Tillandsia 'Rainforest Red', a groundbreaking airplant that brings year-round vibrant color to your collection.
Origin: Patented cultivar (USPP Pat#32009)
Distinctive traits: Bright red foliage maintained throughout the year
Size: Grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) in both width and height
Key features:
- Vibrant coloration: Deep red foliage that holds its color year-round
- Attractive form: Gently recurving rosette of numerous leaves
- Versatile sizing: Available in various sizes to suit different display needs
- Historic significance: America's first patented Tillandsia species
- Low maintenance: Retains red color even in moderate light conditions
'Rainforest Red' is a true showstopper. The airplant forms a lush rosette of slender, needle-like leaves that radiate outward and gently curve downward at the tips. The foliage displays a stunning gradient of reds, from deep crimson at the base to bright cherry red at the leaf tips, with hints of orange and yellow adding depth and dimension.
Scientific note: This cultivar demonstrates:
- The potential for developing Tillandsia varieties with stable, year-round coloration
- Genetic improvements in the Tillandsia genus, leading to patentable traits
- Similarities to T. ionantha and T. 'Victoria' suggest possible genetic relationships

Care tip: Provide bright, filtered light to maintain the vibrant red coloration. While it can tolerate moderate light, very low light conditions may cause some color fading. Mist thoroughly 2-3 times a week or soak for 20-30 minutes every 1-2 weeks, allowing to dry completely between waterings.
Ideal for:
- Collectors seeking a constant pop of color in their airplant displays
- Those who appreciate rare and unique Tillandsia cultivars
- Enthusiasts of red-foliaged plants
- Growers looking for low-maintenance yet visually striking specimens
Display recommendation: The vivid red coloration makes 'Rainforest Red' an excellent focal point in airplant arrangements. Consider mounting it against a light-colored background or pairing it with silver-leaved Tillandsia species for maximum contrast.
Legal note: Unauthorized propagation for commercial use is prohibited. Propagation is allowed by license only.
Bring a patented piece of airplant innovation to your collection with Tillandsia 'Rainforest Red'. Experience the joy of owning a truly unique specimen that provides a stunning crimson display 365 days a year.
