Compact edging with Lavandula angustifolia 'Dwarf Blue'

Lavandula angustifolia 'Dwarf Blue' keeps a low, tidy silhouette with aromatic grey-green foliage and blue-purple flower spikes in summer. Its scale is the point: it reads as a deliberate mound rather than a loose shrub, so it fits neatly along paths, in gravel planting, and in smaller containers.

Once established, the plant holds its shape well and keeps its foliage looking present beyond the main bloom. Repeating several plants creates a clean line of texture and scent that stays legible even when neighbouring perennials are changing through the season.

How Dwarf Blue builds a low mound

Growth starts as new shoots push from the woody framework in spring, filling out into a dense cushion. Flower stems rise above the foliage as the plant moves into summer, then the mound settles back into evergreen structure once bloom finishes.

A mature plant typically sits around 30-40 cm tall, with a spread around 45 cm, depending on pruning and how lean the root zone stays. In pots, the outline often stays even tighter, which suits edging and repeated container displays.

Sun, drainage and root comfort

Bright, open exposure supports short growth, firm stems, and strong leaf scent. Soil texture matters more than richness: a mineral, free-draining root zone keeps the base of the plant in better condition over time.

Chalk, loam, and sandy soils can all work when water passes through easily. If the planting area tends to stay damp, raise the planting level slightly and build in grit so the crown dries between wet spells.

Container watering for Dwarf Blue

In containers, water management is mostly about avoiding a permanently damp centre. Use a pot with clear drainage and a gritty, peat-free outdoor mix that re-wets evenly but does not stay heavy for days.

Check moisture by feeling the pot weight and testing the top third of the mix. Water deeply when that zone has dried, then let excess drain freely. Short, frequent splashes encourage shallow roots and a softer mound.

Keeping the mound trimmed

Light trimming keeps this small lavender looking crisp and prevents the centre from opening. Aim for regular shaping in green growth, so the plant always has leafy points ready to respond.

  • After flowering: remove spent flower stems and lightly round the top growth.
  • Spring tidy: clip off winter-browned tips once new shoots are clearly visible.
  • Where to cut: stay within leafy growth rather than cutting back into bare old wood.
  • Feeding: keep nutrition modest; steady, firm growth is the goal.

Dwarf Blue issue signals

Most problems show up at the crown first. A soft, dull centre or sudden wilting is usually linked to a root zone that stays wet for too long, especially in pots after repeated rain.

Sparse flowering is more often linked to shade or overly rich soil than to lack of water. If the mound becomes leggy, it usually responds to earlier, lighter shaping and a more open, brighter position.

Where this small lavender works best

Lavandula angustifolia 'Dwarf Blue' suits planting where a compact, repeatable lavender shape matters: path edges, raised beds, gravel borders, and container groups. It reads well alongside stone, paving, and fine-textured grasses, and it keeps its place in a scheme even after flowering has finished.

If you like your pillows plump, these won't do it.
Size: 20 x 20 inches, Style: 4 Pack
Disappointed in this item. they do not have enough filling in them and what is there flattens out very quickly. Will not purchase this brand again.

Hands down best hammock accessory
Color: Green, Size: Medium
Tried many, this pillow is perfect. Not too big, not too small. Soft yet supportive. It’s also well made and super comfy. Plus it packs up nicely. I’m a new Wise Owl convert, everything I’ve ordered so far has been excellent quality. Just wish they kept the colors consistent so it all matched (minor annoyance). You need this.

Comfy, soft, packable, and cool
Color: Green, Size: Small
I absolutely love this pillow. It's well constructed but not OVER constructed - it is soft, comfortable to my neck and head - very packable and stays pretty cool - like the 'other side' of the pillow. I also appreciate the stuff sack that Wise Owl sends with it. I was able to get this down into my right side of my Redwing 50 pocket. This thing fits everywhere and while some folks think its a luxury, when you get to be my age - comfort is something that you take for granted. I feel well rested after a night on this bad boy. Shape always fluffs back out. I think it's a great value at the price point it is at compared to other pillows in this range. Very very durable, like all Wise Owl products I own. Easily fits snugly into the bag, and can mold around you depending on how you want to adjust it. I don't use a sleeping pad, just this for my neck support and it really is worth every penny. Water resistance - I'm not sure as I've not had the opportunity to see it but I feel like with the material it is, water would probably bead off in light amounts.

It's comfy but not UL nor packs down well.
Color: Blue, Size: Medium
Don't get me wrong, overall this is a very good mini portable camping pillow that has slightly bigger length, width & thickness than most of the other name brand inflatable camping pillows that cost $20 extra, which is nice for having more pillow/support to work with while you sleep, & it being foam filled rather than inflated means you don't have to worry about it deflating on you overnight out in the wilderness where you likely don't have a backup!.. All that is great until it's time to pack it back up.. It doesn't compact down small, nor easily. You have to put a little elbow grease into tightly rolling it up like a burrito, 🌯 And even Then, it's still a bit of a fight to squeeze it back into it's compression sack, but Still winds up being a bulky bulgy chunk of space real estate in my pack, and if you're a serious hiker you know every ounce counts as well as every inch of space that's taken up by bulky gear. I didn't consider returning or replacing it for something else until wayy past the return window. Again, it's not bad at all for your average travel or weekend camping trips, but for expedition, section or thru-hiking it's not the best choice to go with when budgeting weight & space in your pack. I went with a similarly priced Teton camping pillow that is 18" by 12", also filled not inflated so it's basically the same thing but ever so slightly smaller in circumference, yet packs down noticably easier & more compact, weighing slightly less & taking up noticably less space in your pace as well. I can easily stuff it in the outer back kangaroo pouch on my Osprey Atmos AG 50L.
