Anthurium salgarense

Large, ovate-sagittate leaves and long petioles define Anthurium salgarense. Mature blades have been recorded at around 81–96 cm long and 30–40 cm wide, with dark green upper surfaces, paler undersides and raised pale major veins.

This Colombian species grows terrestrially on steep rocky banks. In a pot, thick roots need a stable, open substrate, while the long petioles need clear space around the crown as new leaves expand.

Large terrestrial Anthurium traits

  • Origin: Native to Colombia.
  • Habitat: Mid-elevation Andean wet-forest habitats and rocky banks.
  • Growth habit: Terrestrial, with short thick internodes and fibrous cataphyll remains.
  • Petioles: Very long, erect-spreading petioles hold the blades away from the crown.
  • Leaf shape: Broad ovate-sagittate blades with undulate margins.
  • Venation: Raised pale greenish-yellow major veins and 12–14 primary lateral veins per side.
  • Scale: Mature leaves can become large, so pot stability becomes important as the plant develops.

Rocky-bank growth and scale

Anthurium salgarense grows from terrestrial rocky-bank habitats. Its roots need air and drainage, and the plant also needs a stable, moisture-retentive aroid mix that can hold a large root system.

Long petioles shift weight outward from the crown. A sturdy container, clear leaf space and careful handling around new growth reduce bent petioles and torn expanding blades.

Pot care for Anthurium salgarense

  • Light: Bright filtered light encourages firm leaf development while reducing scorch risk.
  • Water: Keep the substrate evenly moist, then allow excess water to drain completely.
  • Substrate: Use an open but moisture-retentive aroid mix with bark, coarse fibre, pumice and a small amount of humus-rich material.
  • Humidity: Higher humidity protects new large leaves while they expand.
  • Temperature: Warm, stable temperatures suit the species; cold wet substrate can stall roots.
  • Pot stability: Use a sturdy container once the petioles lengthen and the leaf mass increases.
  • Space: Keep enough clearance around the plant so broad blades and long petioles are not pressed against shelves or neighbouring plants.

Issues with large-leaved growth

  • Top-heavy plant: The pot may be too small or too light for the petiole and leaf mass.
  • Root stress: Dense wet substrate can suffocate roots and cause yellowing.
  • Torn new leaves: Crowding or low humidity can damage large blades while they expand.
  • Scorched patches: Direct sun can mark the broad leaf surface.
  • Slow growth after watering: Cold wet roots may be holding the plant back.
  • Bent petioles: The plant needs more clearance around the crown and leaf spread.

Handling safety

Anthurium salgarense contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and children that may chew the leaves, and handle cut or damaged tissue carefully to avoid irritation.

Botanical background

Anthurium salgarense Croat is a Colombian species in Araceae. It was published in Aroideana in 2003.

As Anthurium salgarense matures, the thick root system, long petioles and large sagittate blades make pot stability part of everyday care.

Warm and Cozy
Size: Adult, Style: Solid, Color: Grey
Bought the adult version in grey for my little brother for Christmas. He absolutely loves it! He wears the thing all the time. He sleeps in it, plays computer games while wearing it, and lounges around the house in it. When washing and drying the washer is fine but I recommend letting it air dry or putting it on tumble dry to prevent the white cotton from bunching up to keep it soft. It is very soft, a good weight, good quality, and size. He does not use the robe tie. My brother is 6 foot and the pocket hangs low but is really big. The pocket is durable—He puts our house cat in the pocket and carries her around in it. He loves this Snuggie and was so excited to get it for Christmas.

Buy it!!! Long, soft, warm winter perfection! ( updated after wear)
⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ You'll want to hibernate all winter in it ! 😆 I'm a 5'10" female and THIS THING IS LONG ENOUGH! (If you're tall, you'll understand why I yelled that part lol) I bought the oversized option. It grazes the top of my feet without dragging the ground, which is literally perfect. 👌 It comes vacuum sealed, so pop it in the dryer when you get it to fluff it up. It is so incredibly soft both inside and out, but particularly so on the inside. Its large enough to be fully dressed underneath, but when you feel the softness & warmth - you probably wont want to be. I wasn't sure about the cuffed sleeves, but once I put it on I realized how much better they are than the open type sleeves of another brand I ordered. They allow you to retain 100% function while wearing a blanket, essentially keeping it from getting in your way. I purchased this bc I'm always cold, and also because it just looked so comfortable. It did not disapoint on either front. It's heavy without feeling weighted , and warm without making me sweat. I opted for the tan / beige option, and it was pretty close to the photo color wise. In person the fabric has a tiny bit of sheen/ reflectivity that almost gives it a slight gold tint in some light. Overall though, true to color. Seriously, I think this thing might be perfect. I plan to order additional colors before word gets out and they sell out lol *EDIT TO UPDATE*** Ive been wearing these things all winter ( yes, I purchased another lol) and after repeated wear and washing I will say that they DO lose a little fluff on the faux shearling side (the inside) and the edges have begun to shed a tiny bit. I've been wearing them A LOT though, we're talking about a dozen runs thru laundry at least... not something that happened immediately. And honestly, it wasn't to the point that I noticed it much... until the next one arrived and reminded me how much fluffier they start off lol I would still buy it... just a small update with wear update worth noting.

Love it!
Very comfy and warm. It’s soft and fuzzy and I love it. I will say I’m not a huge fan of the Sherpa fabric at the bottom, not because it’s not soft, just because this material, in general, seems to easily get bits of stuff stuck in it. The snuggie is slight too long (I’m 5’4) so it touches the ground sometimes and it will pick up sticks and grass and food material. I live on a farm and even if I did nothing but vacuum all day there would still be stuff on the floor and I don’t have time to vacuum all day! So, I dislike the Sherpa material going all the way down and folding like it does at the bottom. However, I’ve been extra careful with this one, and I’ve been able to physically pick any debris caught in it. I am contemplating actually cutting it and re-sewing it ever-so-slightly shorter with the outer material folded and sewn inward instead of the internal Sherpa fabric folded outward. Apart from that, it’s roomy, and I actually like the hood, which I didn’t think I would. The pocket is nice sized and also lined with Sherpa fabric. I don’t actually use the pockets to keep my hands warm but more like a kangaroo pouch to transport things like my phone, book/Kindle, or snax as I’m walking with my hands full. I travel with this thing because I’m always cold and it’s amazing. I fly with it. Yeah, I don’t care if I’m wearing this in public at the airport/on a plane, you know why? Because I’m cozy! Flight delayed? Oh, I’ve got my wearable blanket, I’m gonna nap in comfort! 😝 Airplane AC on Arctic Blast? Ha! I’m in an impenetrable cocoon of warmth and with the hood up, you can’t see me, mouth agape, as I sleep so attractively in public. You couldn’t handle seeing me that hot anyway, I’m doing you a favor! 😂 Oh, also, I took it to the hospital with me (because hospitals are basically morgues) so I washed it on hot to sanitize it. It didn’t shrink or ruin it at all, it’s fine.
