About Pondoland Palm ( Jubaeopsis caffra )

Jubaeopsis caffra, commonly known as the Pondoland Palm, is one of the rarest and most remarkable palm species in the world. It is native to a small coastal area of South Africa and represents the only surviving member of an ancient palm lineage related to Jubaea chilensis (the Chilean Wine Palm).

This unique species is prized for its graceful pinnate leaves, sturdy trunk, and exceptional resistance to wind, salt, and drought. It grows slowly but lives for centuries, making it ideal for collectors and botanic enthusiasts who appreciate rare, prehistoric plants.

Supplied as 2 fresh, viable seeds, ethically sourced from cultivated parent plants to ensure high germination potential and genetic authenticity.

Growing Guide

Germination

Seed Preparation:

  • Use fresh, cleaned seeds.
  • Remove any remaining fruit skin or pulp to prevent fungal contamination.
  • Soak seeds in lukewarm water (28 – 30 °C / 82 – 86 °F) for 4 to 5 days, replacing the water daily.

Sowing Medium:
Use a loose, well‑draining mix – equal parts perlite, cocopeat, and fine sand or pine bark. The substrate must stay slightly moist but airy.

Depth and Conditions:

  • Sow 1.5 – 2 cm (0.6 – 0.8 in) deep.
  • Maintain a warm temperature of 28 – 32 °C (82 – 90 °F); gentle bottom heat helps.
  • Keep humidity high – around 70 – 85 %; cover the tray to retain moisture.
  • Provide bright, indirect light – avoid direct sunlight during early stages.

Germination Time:
Extremely slow; seeds may take 2 to 5 months to sprout under consistent warmth. Patience is essential for this rare species.

Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings carefully after the first leaf appears. Use deep pots to allow early taproot development and avoid root disturbance.

Care

Light:

  • Seedlings prefer filtered light or semi‑shade.
  • Mature palms enjoy full sun or partial shade and tolerate strong winds and salt spray in coastal locations.

Soil:
Prefers well‑draining, sandy or gritty soil rich in organic matter. Avoid compact or waterlogged soil.

Watering:
Keep the substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry a bit before watering again. Drought‑tolerant when established.

Temperature:
Ideal range: 22 – 32 °C (72 – 90 °F). Mature plants can withstand short periods down to −2 °C (28 °F) if dry. Excellent for subtropical or coastal climates.

Fertilization:
Feed every two months during the active growing season with a slow‑release palm fertilizer or diluted liquid seaweed solution.

Pests & Diseases:
Highly resistant to most pests and diseases. Maintain airflow for seedlings to prevent fungal issues in humid conditions.

Tips

  • Keep consistent temperature and humidity until germination.
  • Bottom heat significantly improves success.
  • When the first leaf appears, slowly acclimate the plant to more light.
  • This is a long‑lived collector’s palm that forms a beautiful silhouette with age — a stunning specimen for tropical gardens, greenhouses, and coastal landscapes.

Slim fit for the winner
Size: Medium, Color: Clay Floral Print
Beautiful orange shirt and I love the metal buttons. Very comfortable and I like the slim fit. It appears more tailored. I'm a tall guy at 6'4" and the length for a medium was perfect.

Ten years of ownership…Thank you, Timex!
Color: Black, Size: One Size
Solid watch for everyday wear. I have worn this watch for over 10 years. I let a watch shop replace the battery about every 18 months. Other than the original band (which lasted 5 years) I have had zero problems. Still looks great, rugged and manly😇 Overall I recommend this watch for its value, reliability, simple clear design, legible hands in all light conditions. Great watch!!!

Solid Watch for Everyday Casual Wear
Color: Black, Size: One Size
I have purchased this item other times and I’m quite satisfied with wearing this watch everyday with casual wear. The size is just right not too small or large.

Nice simple effective inexpensive watch
Color: Black, Size: One Size
I just ordered my second one of these. They are cheap, keep good time, show me the date, and last a long time. My last one lasted over 10 years. The only thing wrong with the last one was that the battery needed replacement (I think it was only the second time it had needed a battery in all the years I had owned it) at the same time the band wore out and broke. Rather than buy a new battery plus a new band, I just got a new one. I am hard on watches, and this one stood up very well. I regularly shower and swim with it on, and no problems. It doesn't have a lot of functions I don't need, like stopwatch, multiple time zones, etc. I have found those things more of a bother than a benefit, because any time you bump the knob against something, the display changes and you're always pressing all the buttons multiple times just to get the simple info needed- like what time is it and what is the date DEC 2020 UPDATE - I am ordering another one of these. The last one, I bought in mid 2019. Early in 2020, the date function quit working. By the end of November, the whole thing quit working. I know it's not the battery, because the light still works. So I am reducing my review by one star, and we'll see how well a new one does. The watch before the current one lasted about 10 years, so getting only a little over a year out of the current one is not good. Perhaps the current one just wasn't as good as the previous ones. It's entirely possible that they keep making the same watch out of lesser and lesser materials and workmanship.
