Germination Guide

These tree seeds benefit from a period of cold stratification. Stratification is a process of simulating natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur (if a seed germinates in the middle of winter it will die). In the wild, seed dormancy is usually overcome by the seed spending time in the ground through a winter period and having its hard seed coat softened up by frost and weathering action. This cold, moist period triggers the seed's embryo; its growth and subsequent expansion eventually break through the softened seed coat in its search for sun and nutrients.

  • Get a handful or two of vermiculite, perlite or sterile compost (microwave compost in a plastic bowl for 3 minutes) then allow to cool.
  • Add a little water to the mix. Should be moist but not wet
  • Place in small ziplock bag
  • Place in bottom fridge or in cold shed/outbuilding for 4-6 weeks
  • Spread bag contents on a tray of moist compost.
  • Cover very lightly with compost or vermiculite
  • Keep in a warm place 15-25c
  • Seedlings should appear after 15-25 days
  • Keep moist - best to place seed tray inside a waterproof container and water from the bottom
  • Pot on as required

Olly's General Guide to Seed Sowing!

I love sowing seeds and it runs in the family - dad, granddad and finally my great-granddad for whom the hobby helped him get over his experiences in the Great War. I still get a big kick when I see the first seedling poking through from a new plant that I have never sown before or been successful at. However, even the most experienced gardeners draw "blanks" from time to time. Whilst I sow all the seeds that I sell so I know that they are viable, some are trickier than others and problems can arise so here are some tips to make "blanks" few and far between:

1) Don’t Rush! Tempting though it is when that packet arrives in the post to simply bung the seeds in some compost!

2) Google and YouTube are your friends! Take some time so see the methods other people use to germinate the seed.

3) Think Nature! What conditions do seeds face? For example a seed from a tropical plant will fall to the warm, wet and dark jungle floor. A seed from the mountains of Europe will fall to the floor in Autumn, then have to endure months of freezing temperatures before germinating in the spring. So as growers, what we are trying to do is to simulate the conditions that the seeds will naturally experience and there are plenty of tricks that can be done to short cut the processes somewhat.

4) Good compost pays dividends. The best investment you can make is to purchase three bags - one of potting compost, one of vermiculite and one of horticultural sand. With these three bags I can make up whatever soil type a particular seed likes (although for most seeds I find a 50/50 mix of compost and vermiculite works just fine)

6) Rot is your enemy. The single biggest danger to seed germination is rot - either before germination or after "damping off" when the seeds germinate. To reduce the risk, ensure you have good free draining soil mix and that it is moist but not wet. The best investment you will make is a bottle of (very cheap) 4% hydrogen peroxide (mixed with water 1:4) - this disinfects and also encourages germination. Unless the seed variety absolutely requires it I prefer NOT to cover my seeds trays with plastic bags, Whilst germination is often faster this way, it greatly increases the risk of rot. I prefer to place my seed trans inside a watertight plastic tray and water from the bottom - airflow over the surface reduces the risk. The surface is kept moist as required by spraying with my water/peroxide mix (see above)

Oh yes!!!
Color: Brown
Very satisfied with the purchase of these amazing knives. The price was good. I didn't want a lot of knifes. These are comfortable to hold and cut beautifully. The knife holder is just the right size for a small counter. I like the look of the design of the block holder.

Does the job!!
Size: 14 Pcs, Color: Black
I bought this knife block set for my son for his first apartment and it has everything you need to start out. It does not take up much space. You can set it up on the corner of the counter. I would purchase this again. Very satisfied with the quality of the product.

Okay for the price
Size: 6 Pcs, Color: Stainless Steel
I looked a long time for a quality looking set for a budget price. I'm thankful that this is an option for the price range. Especially if you are on a budget, this is a good option. I know for the budget, you won't get the top-tier quality. However, when I got it, I wasn't too impressed by the quality. Though I'm thankful for the price, I felt this looked a little too cheap. The block was also far too flimsy. I was worried about removing and replacing the knives because the block "frayed" quite a bit. There were "crumbs" of block over the top that fell off the knife after you pulled it out. So I was very worried about touching the knife at all because I was worried about scratching or damaging the knives themselves. The knives themselves, though, I wasn't too worried about. They were the exact style I was looking for minus the color. I was looked for a more black or black-wash stainless steel like the ones I have now. I returned it the next day so I didn't try it out or take pictures. In the future, though, I'm now more willing to pay more for better quality.

This knife set offers great value for the price
Size: 6 Pcs, Color: Stainless Steel
I recently purchased this knife set, and overall, it has been a solid addition to my kitchen. Right out of the box, the knives felt well-balanced and comfortable to hold, which made a noticeable difference during meal prep. The handles provide a secure grip, even when my hands are slightly wet, and the weight distribution gives a sense of control that’s especially helpful for more precise cuts. In terms of performance, the blades are impressively sharp and handle a variety of tasks with ease—from slicing vegetables to cutting through tougher meats. I’ve used them regularly for a few weeks now, and they’ve maintained their edge better than I expected. That said, like most knives, they do benefit from occasional honing to keep them at peak performance. The set itself is versatile, covering all the essentials you’d need in a typical kitchen. The included block (if applicable) keeps everything organized and easily accessible, while also adding a clean, modern look to the countertop. One minor drawback is that the knives require careful hand washing and drying to prevent any potential rusting or wear over time. They’re not the kind of set you’d want to toss into the dishwasher if you want them to last. Overall, this knife set offers great value for the price. It’s a reliable option for both everyday cooking and more involved meal prep, especially for home cooks looking to upgrade their kitchen tools without overspending.
