Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata

Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata is a variegated Burle Marx Philodendron with glossy green leaves broken by cream, pale yellow, or light green sectors. The pattern can appear as marbling, streaking, or larger irregular patches, so each leaf may show a different balance of green and pale tissue.

The plant develops through visible stems with nodes, so it can be kept fuller through pruning or guided upward as the stems begin to extend. Its flexible stems can spread in a pot or be secured to a stake, plank, or pole as growth lengthens.

Variegated Burle Marx traits

  • Growth habit: Stem-forming Philodendron with a spreading to climbing tendency as it matures.
  • Leaf pattern: Green leaves carry cream, yellow, or pale green variegation in irregular sections.
  • Leaf shape: Glossy leaves are held on visible petioles and can build a dense pot-grown plant.
  • Stem behaviour: Stems can be pruned for fuller growth or secured upward once they begin to extend.
  • Propagation: Requires a node-bearing stem cutting; leaf-only cuttings cannot produce a full plant.

Growth, variegation and support

Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata grows from a visible stem with nodes. As the plant develops, those nodes can produce aerial roots and new growth points. It can stay bushier when pruned, or develop a more vertical habit when trained upward.

The variegation is irregular by nature. Some leaves may be mostly green with small pale flashes, while others may carry broader cream or yellow sections. Stems with enough green leaf area usually root and continue growing more reliably than stems producing mostly pale leaves.

Place it in bright filtered light, with the pale cream-yellow sections shielded from direct midday sun that can scorch thin variegated tissue.

Growing Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata indoors

  • Light: Give bright indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun, especially on leaves with large pale sections.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has dried. Rehydrate the root ball fully, then let excess water drain away.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, coco coir or chips, perlite, pumice, and a small moisture-retentive component.
  • Drainage: Keep the potting mix airy. A dense wet mix can cause root stress, yellowing leaves, and weaker stem growth.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps new leaves expand with fewer dry edges on pale tissue.
  • Temperature: Keep between 18–28°C. Avoid cold windowsills and wet substrate in cooler conditions.
  • Support: Add a stake, plank, or pole when stems begin to lean. Secure stems loosely near nodes.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Pause fertiliser if roots are damaged, leaves are yellowing, or the substrate is staying wet for too long.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, growth slows despite good care, or the plant dries much faster than before. Move up gradually.
  • Pruning: Prune above a healthy node to shape the plant or encourage a fuller pot. Keep enough green foliage for recovery.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Can adapt to airy mineral substrates if roots are cleaned carefully and the stem base stays above the wet zone.
  • Propagation: Use stem cuttings with at least one healthy node and some green tissue. Leaf-only cuttings will not restart into a full plant.

Common issues with Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata

  • Brown pale areas: Check for sun scorch, dry air, or irregular watering. Move to bright filtered light and stabilise root moisture.
  • Yellowing leaves: Check whether the lower pot is staying too wet. Improve drainage and let the upper substrate dry further.
  • Weak, mostly pale growth: Prune back to a healthy node with enough green tissue if new growth becomes too pale to continue well.
  • Long stems: Add support or prune above a node to refresh the shape. Root healthy cuttings from sections with visible nodes.
  • Distorted new leaves: Inspect for thrips, mites, scale, or mealybugs around new growth and petiole bases.

Managing variegated growth

Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata can produce greener leaves, finely marbled leaves, or broader cream-yellow sections as it grows. Stems with enough green tissue are more reliable for continued leaf production and propagation.

When propagating, choose a stem section with a healthy node and enough green leaf tissue to support rooting. Very pale cuttings can struggle because they have less chlorophyll available for energy production.

Pet and child safety

Keep Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata away from pets and children. Its tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat, digestive tract, and sensitive skin. Wash hands after pruning or handling sap.

Philodendron genus and Burle Marx name

Philodendron belongs to the Araceae family. The genus name is commonly translated as “tree-loving”, reflecting the tree-associated growth seen in many Philodendron. Philodendron burle-marxii G.M.Barroso, 1957 was named in honour of Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.

With steady warmth, an airy substrate and room for its stems to extend, Philodendron 'Burle Marx' variegata can mature into a full, patterned indoor plant shaped by pruning or trained upward.

Great computer!
This is a great computer! I'm 70 and love it! The only complaint is that I can't use the wireless keyboard because it only came with 1 usb instead of 2. I had to use the wired keyboard from my old computer.

Easy to set up!
Despite the price ($529 on sale) - this fits my budget of less than $1000! I’ve upgraded from an old iMac that was so slow and this one fits the bill for being faster and more efficient. Having a wireless mouse and keyboard is a plus. I’m not a fan of the pop-up camera as it needs more finesse to pop out naturally - for me it seems so rough popping it in and out. Still trying to figure it out and will update my review along the way. It came nicely package, value for the money is on point, the size is perfect - not too big or small, it looks sleek but the sound quality is warbled. It can’t be all perfect for its price. I’d still recommend as a start up computer as it is budget friendly!

Ease of use
I had a Dell after years and years it finally gave up. I am elderly, I don't like change. I tried another brand and it was so complicated I ordered my good old tried and true Dell. It has new stuff I don't know how to use, but I don't do music, social media, movies or any of the things it offers, so I am able to use it just like my older computer. It is wonderful. The screen is big and everything is clear and it was easy to set up. It is compatible with my printer and has more storage than I will ever use. I highly recommend it, especially to beginners.

The “I Finally Got My Life Together” Desktop
The Dell 24 All-in-One is exactly what I needed: simple, fast, and not taking up my whole desk like it pays rent. The 23.8" FHD screen is crisp and easy on the eyes, and the Intel Core 3 100U processor handles everyday tasks without acting dramatic. It boots up quick, runs smooth, and the Intel Graphics do their job like quiet overachievers. I love that everything is built into one clean unit—just plug it in, and boom, you're productive (or at least you look productive). If you want a desktop that’s reliable, compact, and doesn’t come with a 20-cord headache, this one is a winner. Perfect for work, school, or pretending you’re organized.

Quality Thumping Boombox
Color: Black, Color: Black
I've been a longtime user of JBL products, but the Boombox has been my favorite speaker in their entire lineup. The built in handle, waterproof design, and fantastic battery life are what drew me to it in the first place. I owned the original Boombox for nearly 8 years. It survived dozens of camping trips in extreme heat, and was tested by FL beach trips, one of which ended in a violent rainstorm. It never failed me and could hold up to any abuse, which is why I have no problems recommending their Boombox lineup to anyone. My excitement for the Boombox 4 grew when I found out it would use an easily replaceable battery, simply by popping off the bottom cover. I had to replace the internal battery of my BB1 after 7.5 years, and it was a terrible experience that took around two hours, and was very frustrating at times. I told myself I would never buy another Bluetooth speaker that didn't have a hot-swap style battery compartment. I'm happy to see that the new speaker lineup does this. SPECS The new JBL Boombox 4 has significantly more power than the original model from 8 years ago. We're talking a jump from 40 watts to 200 RMS watts on battery power. That, combined with the larger drivers let me know that I was in for quite an upgrade. If you already have the 3rd gen BB3, I would think this wouldn't be a significant upgrade for you, but coming from the OG BB1 it most certainly was for me! The ports on the rear flip cover are power and USB Type C. APPEARANCE After unboxing the new Boombox 4 I could tell it was a bit larger than the old Boombox 1, but not by much. I'm happy to see JBL go back to a handle that appears to be a part of the speaker, instead of looking like it was thrown on as an add-on, like that of the Boombox 3's handle. It's also comfortable to hold, and the weight distribution of this speaker is spot-on. I can't tell that this new speaker is 1.5 pounds heavier than the BB1. Overall it's a very good looking speaker. The pictures don't do it much justice. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the craftsmanship. INDOOR LISTENING My initial listening experience with the new BB4 was ear-to-ear grin worthy. I immediately realized this upgrade was legit! There's so much more lower end grunt. While playing indoors at lower volumes, I found that for certain music genres I really appreciated the low-end bass boost mode. It provides the thump you crave, even at low levels. As you raise the volume up to anything over half, I find the bass boost unnecessary, and perhaps even a bit overpowering. That's likely subjective to each persons personal tastes, as well as music genres. It's nice to have the option to use it when you want it. OUTDOOR LISTENING My OG BB1 was my favorite go-to speaker for outdoor Bluetooth music sessions, and this one excels even more at that. The BB4 has significantly more power on offer, so it's easier to fill any space with fantastic sounding music. With our modest sized corner lot, I find that keeping its volume around the 50% point is plenty to fill our yard with great sound, while not being distracting to any neighbors who may be around outdoors. What impressed me most with the new speaker is how much further and clearer both the highs and low frequencies come through. With the BB1, once I walked away more than 20 feet the bass really fell off and wasn't too noticeable, but with the BB4 I can still hear the low notes from that distance. I'm truly impressed at what the BB4 can do as an outdoor speaker. To respect my neighbors, I didn't run the Boombox 4 at maximum output, but for the brief time I had it up around 80% it was obvious that this speaker is plenty loud for most people. AURACAST Next I paired the Boombox 4 with my PartyBox 520, using Auracast. I turned on both speakers, started playing music from one, then hit the Auracast button on each. Within 5-8 seconds they paired up and were in sync with each other. Obviously pairing a speaker like the Boombox 4 along with a much larger one like the Partybox 520 is going to create a situation where you mostly hear the larger speaker. This leads me to the decision that the best way to utilize a setup like this is to run one indoors and the other outside. For a nice sized party, the Boombox would serve well indoors and the PartyBox would be perfect outside. CONS If I had to knock JBL for anything with the new BB4, it would be their decision to omit the 3.5mm aux port. This was a feature all the previous models had. I know there's a USB Type C port for lossless audio playback, but it doesn't work with a Type C to 3.5mm aux adapter. I enjoy projector movie and game nights, and I used my BB1 for the audio when viewing content with the projector by way of a simple aux cable. I did a bit of research and discovered that my Google Chromecast has Bluetooth audio playback available, but not the Roku streaming stick that I've always used for the projector. I was able to connect the Boombox 4 to my Chromecast and use it to play the audio, so I'm thankful that works! Still would have loved a 3.5mm aux port. SUMMARY JBL continues to impress with their newer lineup of speakers. As bittersweet as it was to let it go, I'm happy to be rid of the Boombox 1, as the Boombox 4 is an amazing upgrade in nearly every way. I won't have to worry about complex battery swaps in the future, which is probably the main reason I went for the upgrade. I'm happy with the extra power this speaker puts out. For anyone looking for an all-purpose, outdoor Bluetooth speaker, this is the one! No need to worry about water or dust interrupting your music sessions. Stop thinking about buying a Boombox 4 and just pull the trigger!
