Introducing the Adromischus cristatus, known as the crinkle leaf plant, which is a unique and visually striking succulent. Native to South Africa, it is a stunning member of the Adromischus, opens in a new tab genus, and is also known as a key lime pie succulent or ravioli plant. This plant is beloved by succulent enthusiasts for its distinctive crinkled leaves and compact growth habit.

The crinkle leaf plant gets its common name, key lime pie plant, due to the resemblance of its leaves to the crinkled texture of a key lime pie. The leaves have unique ruffled edges that give them a crinkled appearance, similar to the crust of a pie.

The Adromischus cristatus plant features thick, fleshy leaves that are green in color and are covered in tiny hairs. The leaves grow in a rosette formation and have pointed tips.

This slow-growing plant has a compact growth habit, making it suitable for small spaces such as windowsills or tabletops.

When fully grown, the crinkle leaf plant has a tall stem that can grow up to 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide. It is relatively small and compact, making it an ideal choice for indoor gardening or small succulent arrangements.

The flowers of Adromischus cristatus are small and tubular and can vary in color from pale pink to white. The flowers emerge on tall, slender stalks that rise above the foliage. While the blooms are not the main attraction of this plant, they add a delicate touch to its overall appearance.

Propagation of the crinkle leaf plant can be done through stem or leaf cuttings. Simply take a healthy leaf or stem cuttings, then allow it to dry and callous for a few days. Then, plant it in well-drained soil and keep it lightly moist until the roots emerge. The plant can also produce offsets, which can be separated and planted individually to grow into new plants. Additionally, using a rooting hormone can help speed up the process of root development for quicker growth.

Watering Needs

To properly water your crinkle leaf plant, it's essential to follow a "soak and dry" method. This means thoroughly watering the plant until water drains out of the bottom of the pot and then allowing the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other issues, so it's crucial to avoid keeping the soil consistently moist.

The frequency of watering can vary depending on factors such as the temperature, humidity, and the type of potting mix used. In the spring and summer, during the growing season, you can water your Adromischus cristatus every 7-10 days. However, always check the moisture level of the soil before watering to ensure it has dried out sufficiently.

During the dormant period in fall and winter, the crinkle leaf plant requires less frequent watering. Reduce the watering frequency to once every 2-3 weeks or when the soil has completely dried out. Remember, it's better to underwater than to overwater succulents, as they can withstand periods of drought better than excessive moisture.

Light Requirements

When grown indoors, the crinkle leaf plants prefer bright, indirect light for at least six hours. Find a spot near a window where it can receive a good amount of filtered sunlight. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. If you notice the leaves stretching or leaning towards the light source, it's an indication that it needs more light. On the other hand, if the leaves start turning yellow or brown, they may be getting too much direct sunlight.

When growing outdoors, it's important to acclimate it gradually to prevent sunburn. Start by placing it in a partially shaded area and gradually increase the exposure to full sun over a few weeks. Outdoors, your Adromischus cristatus can tolerate more direct sunlight than when kept indoors. However, it's still essential to provide some shade during the hottest parts of the day, especially in regions with intense sunlight.

Remember, finding the right balance of light is key to the crinkle leaf plant's well-being. Whether indoors or outdoors, aim for bright, indirect light and make adjustments based on the plant's response. With proper lighting, your Adromischus cristatus will flourish and showcase its unique crinkled leaves for you to enjoy.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Adromischus cristatus favors very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized potting mix, opens in a new tab that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your succulent to thrive.

When it comes to fertilizing, Adromischus cristatus doesn't require heavy feeding. During the spring growing season, you can apply a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. This means using half the recommended dosage on the fertilizer packaging. Apply the diluted fertilizer once a year to provide a gentle nutrient boost.

During the dormant period in fall and winter, it's best to avoid fertilizing altogether. Succulents, including the crinkle leaf plant, naturally slow down their growth during this time, so they don't need as much nutrition. Over-fertilizing can lead to excessive growth and weak stems, so it's better to err on the side of caution and skip the fertilizer during the dormant season.

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors, the crinkle leaf plant is well-suited to average warm temperatures between 65-75°F. It can tolerate slightly freezing temperatures down to 55°F but may suffer damage if exposed to frost or cold hardy temperatures. It's best to keep the plant away from drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations, such as near air conditioning vents or heaters.

For outdoor cultivation, it is generally hardy in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. This means it can tolerate mild to warm climates where the average minimum temperatures. If you live in a colder region, you can still enjoy this plant by keeping it indoors or in containers that can be brought indoors during winter.

The Adromischus cristatus is adaptable and can tolerate a range of humidity levels. It can thrive in typical indoor humidity, which is usually around 40-60%. If your home tends to be very dry, especially during winter months, you can increase humidity around the plant by placing a tray filled with water and pebbles nearby or using a humidifier.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Adromischus cristatus (Crinkle leaf plant or key lime pie plant) is a fascinating succulent with its crinkled leaves and compact growth habit. Its unique appearance, resembling the texture of a key lime pie, adds to its charm. This plant is native to the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa and thrives in well-draining soil. It stays relatively small, making it perfect for indoor gardening or small spaces. Taking care of the crinkle leaf plant involves providing it with bright, indirect light, occasional watering, and well-draining soil. With a little love and attention, this stunning succulent will thrive in your home or garden.

All-around good chair, suitable for me at 6'6", comfortable and no issues
Pros: The assembly is straightforward and doesn't require much strength; I would expect my mother to have no issue putting this chair together. If you're elderly or disabled, a relative or helper should have an easy and quick time of putting it together, and there is very little chance of making a mistake during assembly. Sturdy at and slightly above the recommended weight limit. I peaked around 256 or 258lbs while using this chair, and it didn't show any signs of complaint then, and it hasn't shown signs of wear since. Really comfortable. I'm an eight-hours-a-day user, almost without exception, and I have no complaints. The leather holds up very well. I don't expect this to be true forever, but after approximately 1800 hours of use, there is no tear or warning sign. It leans back super stably. That's the most important aspect for me. It's tall enough to support my 6'6" frame. My back rests comfortably, so the odds are yours will fit, too. For the scary few who tower over me, and so you can search it easily, here's a height guide: 6'3" 6'4" 6'5" - The chair is good for your heights 6'7" - You should also be well served, unless your height is mostly in your torso. 6'8" - You're at the cusp. I think you will be comfortable in this chair, and alternatives that are built for our (mostly your) height cost so much more. I'd give it a try. I wish you luck. 6'9" 6'10" 6'11" - This is written for 6'9. For 6'10, 6'11, scale the significance of the caution. I think this chair will prove uncomfortable for you or encourage bad posture. I'd encourage you to look elsewhere. Cons: This is well covered in other reviews: the caps that cover up the screws on the side of the arms are poorly designed. One falls off every day or two. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's optional. You can toss the caps in the trash. The screws are not exposed. They sit deep within the plastic of the arm. Personally, I just push the covers back on when I notice they fell. The armrests could be better for me, I think. I'm not sure exactly what my complaint is. I think they are a little too narrow for my liking, but I'm 6'6" with broad shoulders and long arms and unusual joints. The spacing seems fine for a typical user. Notes: I only sit leaning the chair back or sitting up straight at the edge of my seat. Some aspects of this review may not translate perfectly to locked-in-place, sitting back, upright usage.

Awesome!
Update: March 2022 - Funny reading my previous review now. All the cons I mentioned before, I literally don’t even notice at all. In fact, I like the chair I got so much I just got another in white. My boyfriend is using the old one and I needed one for my home office. And sadly, my cats did scratch up the black chair a little (the cats live outside now) but the chair has otherwise stood up to use perfectly. Other than the scratches, is basically like new. I do wish I knew of a good repair kit cause I would like to fix up the scratches. The chair is just extremely comfortable and supportive which I need even more these days for my home business. A very good purchase!! I just received my chair 2 days after ordering it. It took me about 20 minutes to put it together which was very easy. I am sitting in it now typing this review. Pros: -Very attractive. I ordered the black color and it appears just as in the pictures. -Slides smoothly over my linoleum floors. -Seat is soft and comfortable, hopefully it will stay that way over time, but too soon to tell. -Very easy to assemble. -The seat is good size for the average American and seems comparable in width to the chairs I use at work. Cons: -The chair does not lower as much as I wanted. I like my legs at a 90 degree angle when sitting. It is close with my shoes on, but about 2 inches to high. If I had known this, I very likely would not have ordered this chair as its one of my most important features for sitting comfortably. I am 5'6”. I hope that with a little wear the cushion will compress a bit, and if not I may get a small foot stool to solve the problem. -As others have described, this chair pretty much doesn't recline in any appreciable way even at the loosest setting. Basically to stay reclined you have to keep your legs pushing back the whole time which eliminates the point of reclining. I have read from others that over time, this loosens up. This feature is not very important to me, but may be to others. -The seat depth is about 2 inches shorter than I would like. Overall, I think it is a quality chair for the price assuming the above negatives aren't deal breakers for you. I will be keeping this chair since I do not spend a lot of time at my desk and the overall quality outweighs the few negatives for me.

Updated after less then 3 months of owning!
I have only had the chair a few hours now so this review is of first impression and details. I usually wait to do reviews but choose to on this one. Things I noticed that maybe important to others as information: If you are a tall person you may want to measure your height and etc. I am 5' 6" Tall 175lbs. and this chair is perfect size for me. it does have some room 20" max width from arm rest to arm rest. seat is 19" deep from back to front, Back Height from seat is 26" to top (Will be a little more height when sat on) but this being said the top of my head is just perfectly at the top of the head rest height. Putting it together is a breeze and anyone could put this together, Everything's Labeled to fit the instructions, packaged well. Took me about 10 minutes. Pros: Very Comfortable, Perfect size for me, Looks Great, Easy to put together if you follow the easy directions. No tools needed (Tool is included), Arm rests Height Perfect, Cons: The Back is only held together by the arm rests, This I find very odd but possibly normal to all chairs. If you rock the chair back and forth you can feel the back flexing (This I believe to be why others have claimed the chair squeaks and makes noise while tilting back). I am going to make a bracket that will attach the back to the bottom of the Seat to keep it secure and sturdy for the long haul. P.S update on the chair after less then 3 months of owning, although the chair is still comfortable but with a major Con. with normal daily use the fake leather on the arm rests has started to crack and peal. I will not be buying this chair again nor recommend to anyone.

I really wanted to like this chair,
it looks good, it is a nice size, and it starts out pretty comfortable. The vinyl seems pretty durable and I've not had the troubles others have noted with seams tearing or starting out faulty, mine have been near perfect. Assembly is easy, just 12 screws and you simply put them all in finger tight, then toque them down a bit at a time over about 3 passes to get them evenly tight while letting everything balance out as it goes. Much like changing a car tire. If you install one screw and tighten with all your might then move on to the next you'll have trouble with anything you try to assemble, including this chair. Assembly is rarely a problem for me, but the issue here is the padding. I weigh less than the weight limit but I'm tall and thin and my muscular bicyclist's butt is apparently too much for this chair's cushions. At 8 months, I gave up on blankets and pillows and Amazon politely replaced my first chair with zero fuss. Two months later I got a job telecommuting and the 2nd chair has gone totally flat in only another month. I really wanted to like this chair, but the padding just doesn't last. Update: I've been using an additional pad in the seat and though I'm not fond of the look, the price is right since I already paid for the chair. A couple days ago I leaned back and hear a "pop". The back is all floppy and so I take it apart looking for the problem. I tracked the problem to a metal bracket inside the upholstery. I had to cut the vinyl to reach the problem but found the bracket is a large well engineered solid steel plate with plenty of surface area to handle the stresses and the wood is top quality plywood with no voids. Amazon did an awesome job having this chair re-engineered and specified good materials, but their assemblers didn't bother to tighten the screws. No amount of engineering can fix lousy assembly work. Amazon is clearly trying here but they're being thwarted by their supply chain left and right. To be fair, the two chairs they have sent me collectively did last enough for the price I paid so I won't be asking for another replacement.
