Chenopodium capitatum, commonly known as strawberry spinach, is a distinctive annual herbaceous plant in the Amaranthaceae family, native to much of North America and parts of Europe and Asia, where it typically grows in disturbed sites, woodland edges, riverbanks, and open fields. The plant forms an upright, branching habit, usually reaching 30–90 cm in height, with soft, triangular to lance-shaped leaves that are green to slightly glaucous and arranged alternately along the stems. Its most striking feature is the dense, rounded clusters of bright red to crimson, berry-like structures that appear in summer; these are not true berries but compact inflorescences composed of numerous tiny flowers surrounded by fleshy, colorful bracts, giving the plant a strawberry-like appearance. The actual flowers are small, greenish, and inconspicuous, lacking showy petals, and are primarily wind-pollinated. Chenopodium capitatum has a long history of use by Indigenous peoples as both a food and a dye plant: the leaves were eaten cooked as a leafy vegetable similar to spinach, while the red fruiting clusters were consumed fresh or used to impart color to foods, though their flavor is generally mild and seedy. Ecologically, the plant provides food for birds and small mammals and contributes to early-successional plant communities. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable and relatively easy to grow, often reseeding freely under favorable conditions.
