Anthurium clarinervium, commonly known as the Velvet Cardboard Anthurium, is one of the most admired tropical aroids in the Araceae family. Native to the limestone cliffs and rainforests of Chiapas, Mexico, this rare species is celebrated for its thick, velvety, heart-shaped leaves adorned with striking, white vein patterns that give it a sculptural, almost architectural beauty.

Each leaf is a masterpiece — dark emerald-green with a suede-like texture and a network of silvery veins that catch the light beautifully. The leathery foliage grows on long petioles emerging from a compact rosette, giving the plant a bold yet elegant form. Over time, Anthurium clarinervium can produce unique, pale green flowers (spathes) followed by bright orange berries, adding further intrigue to its display.

Luxurious, sophisticated, and surprisingly resilient, this Anthurium is the perfect statement plant for collectors and interior enthusiasts seeking a touch of tropical opulence.

Anthurium clarinervium – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch its velvety leaves, while too little light may slow growth and cause dull colouring. East- or north-facing windows are ideal, or use filtered light in brighter rooms.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry, using filtered or rainwater if possible. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf edges to crisp. Ensure excellent drainage and reduce watering frequency in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C or exposure to cold drafts.
Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) is essential for maintaining velvety foliage. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or place the plant on a pebble tray to create a humid microclimate.

Soil and Potting

Use a loose, airy, and well-draining aroid mix — a blend of compost, perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir works perfectly. This replicates its natural epiphytic habitat, allowing roots to breathe. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix and encourage strong growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser or one formulated for aroids. Avoid over-fertilising, as excess nutrients can damage the sensitive roots. Suspend feeding during autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any yellow or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a neat appearance and promote new growth. Wipe the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and highlight their velvet sheen. Rotate occasionally to ensure even light exposure and balanced growth.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, Anthurium clarinervium typically reaches 40–60 cm in height and spread indoors. Mature plants develop thicker leaves and a more defined vein pattern over time. With proper care, it can live for decades, becoming a treasured heirloom in your collection.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Dull leaves: Insufficient light or dust accumulation.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by spider mites or thrips — treat with neem oil and maintain humidity.

Background and Benefits

Discovered in the limestone-rich forests of Chiapas, Anthurium clarinervium grows naturally as an epiphyte, anchoring its roots into rocky crevices while absorbing moisture from the air. Its thick leaves are an adaptation to these conditions, storing water and nutrients efficiently.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this Anthurium is also known for improving indoor air quality by filtering common toxins. Symbolically, its heart-shaped leaves represent love, strength, and endurance — a fitting emblem for a plant that thrives through patience and care.

Pair it with contrasting foliage such as Philodendron ‘White Knight’, Alocasia ‘Silver Dragon’, or Calathea orbifolia for a layered, high-impact tropical display. Engaging and Different!
    Format: Hardcover
Looking for a new kid's author to try now that Harry Potter has retired to a quiet life out of the spotlight? Try Stuart Gibbs. His first novel, Belly Up, is an engaging mix of mystery, humor, and adventure (as well as lots of trivia about the animal kingdom ranging from the fascinating to the . . . well, I'll let you read the book!) The story takes place at FunJungle, a huge new zoo/amusement park filled with many colorful characters. When the not-so-loveable mascot of the park, Henry the Hippo, turns up (literally) dead one day, only 12-year old Teddy, the son of two zoo employees, recognizes that this was no random event and begins his investigation only to find himself a target. The book is perfect for the 5th-8th grade crowd (although very enjoyable for us grown-ups who haven't quite grown up yet and still love well-crafted young adult titles). I'll definitely be following his next book (not a sequel to this but an adventure based on the Three Musketeers when they were younger) which looks like will be available this fall.

    Amazing but one problem
    Format: Kindle
I LOVE this book but the one problem is that there are curse words. I'm 12 and I'm aware that Stuart Gibbs curses but I feel like in this particular book he cursed a lot more than he usually does but other than that I absolutely LOVED reading this I will get the whole series for sure! If you already have read this whole series and want to read more I highly recommend spy school ( all of them there are I believe 13 of them) and space case.

Fun for Kids of All Ages
    Format: Paperback
Belly Up is a hit with my 8-year-old son, and even my 14-year-old can’t get enough of it! The story is funny, adventurous, and full of clever twists that appeal to both younger and older readers. It’s perfect for kids who love animals, mystery, and humor — a book that keeps everyone hooked from start to finish.

LOVE book...but a few swear words....
    Format: Paperback
I LOVE this book! I love the plot! But, I would of reviewed this book 5 stars if: First, there are a few swear words throughout the book! As a kid, I find it disappointing to find a couple swear words in a kids book! The swear words, (a**, h***,d***) are used very loosely. I mean come on! Adding those swear words do NOT add to the plot and just make the book a 4 star review. Also, as a devoted Christian, I also find it disappointing that the characters say a couple of things ( God knows...., God....). If you are going to buy this book, I would make sure you're fine with a bit of language and some stuff......The plot is lovely, definitely a mystery book. The book definitely makes you think and get engaged. Finished book in 5 days and want the rest of the series. But if you buy this book, be careful of the swear words. I will read this book again....
