El saúco negro americano, conocido como Sambucus canadensis, es un arbusto caducifolio, algo extenso y con retoños originario de América del Norte. Por lo general, crece hasta 1,50 a 3,60 m de alto y de ancho, y prospera a pleno sol o en sombra parcial. La planta prefiere suelos medios a húmedos, bien drenados y tolera una amplia gama de tipos de suelo, incluido el suelo arcilloso. A menudo se encuentra en riberas de arroyos, bosques húmedos y a lo largo de los bordes de las carreteras.

Entre junio y julio, la baya del saúco negro americano produce pequeñas flores blancas con aroma a limón en racimos grandes y planos, a los que siguen racimos de frutos de baya del saúco negro a fines del verano. Los frutos son comestibles cuando se cocinan y se usan comúnmente en mermeladas, jaleas, rellenos de tartas y vino de baya del saúco. También son atractivos para la vida silvestre.
