Summary: Bigger, bolder, and just as breathtaking — this large variegated banana plant is the ultimate centrepiece for tropical plant lovers in European homes and urban jungles.
✨ Why You’ll Love the Musa × paradisiaca 'Ae Ae'
- Larger size delivers immediate visual impact in any room
- Striking white-and-green striped foliage unlike any other houseplant
- Highly sought-after collector’s plant, now available in a substantial pot size
- Perfect for spacious living rooms, sunrooms, or indoor plant corners
🌞 Light & Placement
Needs bright, indirect light to maintain vivid variegation. Ideal placement is near large windows with filtered light. Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure.
💧 Water & Humidity
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feel dry. Keep humidity high, especially during dry winter months in European interiors. Loves regular misting or a pebble tray setup.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Plant in a well-aerated mix with drainage — use potting soil mixed with perlite and coco coir or bark. Ensure the pot has proper drainage holes to prevent root rot.
🐾 Toxicity & Safety
Generally non-toxic, but can cause mild digestive upset if eaten by pets. Best kept elevated or in pet-free zones.
🌱 Growth & Propagation
This larger specimen has a head start in growth. Expect upward development and fuller foliage with time. Propagate by separating well-developed pups at the base.
📆 Seasonal & Special Care
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser. In colder months, reduce watering and keep plant away from cold drafts or radiators.
🐛 Common Issues
- Leaf edges browning: usually due to low humidity or inconsistent watering
- Pale or all-green leaves: may indicate insufficient light
- Root rot: caused by overwatering or compacted soil
🧬 Botanical Background
Musa × paradisiaca 'Ae Ae' is a rare variegated banana cultivar, renowned for its painterly striped leaves. Native to tropical climates, it thrives as a houseplant in bright, warm European interiors, and is adored for its ornamental foliage rather than fruit production.
