How much soil will you need?

All volumes are approximate but use the volume above as a guide to work out how much soil or other substrates you need. Remember to allow for the plant's roots, they can take up more room than you might think. Also note volume is based on filling to the top (with no plant), but you wouldn't normally fill right to the top of the pot, otherwise you'll get overflow when you water.

What pot size should you go to when repotting?

As a general rule, it's best to only go up one to two pot sizes when repotting. Too big an increase can increase the risk of root rot and temporarily stunt or slow down foliage growth. Too much more soil can increase root rot by holding too much water for too long. Too much more soil can also stunt or slow foliage growth while plants divert their energy to root growth to fill in the new space.

One pot size is about 2cms wider than what you plant is in now. For example, from a 12cm wide to a 14cm wide pot, depending on the pot heights. If your new pot is both taller and wider, that may account for moving up two pot sizes, so do check both height and width.

What are Rain clear pots made of?

Rain
pots are recyclable (recycle code 5), made of the same type of thermoplastic used for food, such as kids lunchboxes to medicine bottles. I prefer this type of plastic for plants because it has:

  • High chemical resistance to reduce leaching, making them a better choice when using fertiliser so nutrients stay available to roots and don't build-up over time.
  • High heat resistance, handy for sun lovers indoors, and for cleaning with hot enough water to kill any baddies if you ever get pests. Also top rack safe in the dishwasher.
  • Great clarity for use when you want to see what's inside, ideal to keep an eye on root health.
  • Low moisture loss making it easier to predict when your plants need watering again, and a great option for heated, dry-air conditions like a typical kiwi winter.
  • BPA free for peace of mind.

 Support ridges for extra strength

Although hard to see once potted up, look closely and you'll see the Rain pots have fine support ridges running down the inside of the pots (they are smooth on the outside).

These add extra strength and sturdiness, great for plants on root roids that like to get pushy, like ZZ plants. This design allows for strength while still being thin enough to retain high clarity, so you can easily monitor root health. Still thick enough to reuse over and over. Definitely not a single-use throw-away.

Drainage for water and air flow

I love the simple yet clever drainage design on the Rain pots. 8 decent sized drainage holes for free flow of water with a raised sectional design to increase airflow and reduce the risk of fungi and root rot.

Which cover pots do these fit?

You can use a clear nursery pot by itself, but if you want a cover pot, have a look at the 12.5cm Elho cover pot range.

You still get a decent amount of breathing room around the edges to improve air flow and reduce growth of fungi. Easy to lift in and out for watering.

A superb addition to the Marvel Darth Vader canon
    Format: Paperback
An almost perfect run of comic books, focused around the Imperial assault on Mon Cala post-Episode III. Many familiar faces are here: Vader, of course; Tarkin; Ackbar; Palpatine; Rogue One’s Admiral Raddus; and many more, including Sith, Jedi, and clones (there’s a nice nod to Order 66). Charles Soule deftly weaves an intriguing narrative, fast-paced but also with plenty of depth. The art is also excellent. In addition to the main stretch of the story, the trade also contains the Darth Vader annual, an outstanding Rogue One story that caps things off nicely. Highly recommended reading for Star Wars fans.

    Good for Darth vader fans.
    Format: Paperback
This book was amazing. I prefribly like vol.4 more than vol.3. The writers of this book have outdone themselves again, another one of Vaders archaic stories and the book was in perfect condition. I highly recommend it.

Charles Soule's Series Continues to Impress and is Arguably the Best of Marvel's New Canon
    Format: Paperback
Darth Vader leads the invasion of Mon Cala. With the Empire tightening its grip across the galaxy, Vader is dispatched by his master to the aquatic world of Mon Cala to track down a rogue Jedi who may be advising the planet's king. With the Inquisitors in tow, Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin face off with one of the first open acts of rebellion in their new Empire. Soule is at his absolute best with this series as he continues to explore a version of Vader haunted by his own inner goodness and memories of the past (the book does contain some references to events of the Clone Wars television show, but you don't need to have seen it to grasp the story). Likewise, his exploration of the seduction of the dark side is fantastic with a new Jedi target willing to use deception and war in order to light the sparks of a future rebellion. The final issue of the book may be one of the best Star Wars comics of the entire new canon with Tarkin hunting Vader for sport (on the latter's request oddly enough) across a desolate and hostile planet. The issue isn't what one expects but makes a great deal of sense when exploring the relationship between these two characters (while also explaining why Vader is so deferential to Tarkin during A New Hope). The final addition is a decent annual that sees Vader investigating the Death Star and sabotage of its construction. The annual isn't the best addition to the series (the artwork isn't up to the standards of the rest of the series), but it does introduce some intriguing ideas about Tarkin and Vader's relationship and the events that set up the Rogue One movie.
