Hymenocallis pygmaea 'South of the Border' is a 2026 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of the rare "Carolinas" native spider lily. Pygmy spider lily was first published in 1962 by the late Hamilton Traub, from a specimen discovered by pre-eminent Southeast US botanist, Mary Henry. Pygmy spider lily only occurs in a few populations along the North Carolina/South Carolina coastal border. Our offering was propagated from a Gerald Smith collection from the Waccamaw River area of South Carolina. These genetics were used in writing the hymenocallis treatment for Flora of North America. This is a stoloniferous spider lily, forming interconnected 8" tall, narrow-leaf rosettes, topped for us, starting in late May with 1' tall spikes of large white, nocturnally lemon fragrant spider-like flowers...a truly splendid specimen for a moist-to-wet site in part-to-full sun.
