If you could only put one seed in your feeder, black oil sunflower seed would be it. Thin-shelled and packed with high-energy fat and protein, black oil sunflower is the universal favorite — attracting more species of wild birds than any other single seed. Chickadees crack them open in seconds. Cardinals carry them off one by one. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, jays, juncos, and finches all flock to it. Fill your feeder once and watch the action begin.

Why Duncraft Black Oil Sunflower?

Duncraft sources only premium-grade black oil sunflower seed. Carefully processed for top quality, this seed offers excellent value with no filler ingredients. That means less mess under your feeder and more value per pound.

  • 100% black oil sunflower seed, no fillers, no waste
  • Thin shells make it easy for small birds to crack open
  • High in fat and protein — essential energy for year-round feeding
  • Attracts the widest variety of backyard birds of any single seed
  • Works in hopper, tube, platform, and tray feeders
  • 5 lb resealable bag for freshness

Birds attracted: Black-capped Chickadees, Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatches, House Finches, Purple Finches, American Goldfinches, Dark-eyed Juncos, Song Sparrows, Pine Siskins, and many more.

How to feed: Serve in any hopper, tube, platform, or tray feeder. For the cleanest feeding experience, pair with a no-mess feeder tray to catch any dropped shells. Black oil sunflower shells do accumulate under feeders over time — rake or sweep periodically, or switch to our hulled Sunflower Heart Chips for a completely shell-free option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is black oil sunflower seed and why do birds love it?
Black oil sunflower seed is a small, thin-shelled sunflower variety with a higher oil content than striped sunflower. The thin shell makes it easy for small birds like chickadees and finches to crack open, while the high fat content provides the concentrated energy birds need — especially during cold weather and migration.

What birds does black oil sunflower seed attract?
Black oil sunflower attracts the widest variety of backyard birds of any single seed, including chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, woodpeckers, nuthatches, finches, juncos, sparrows, and grosbeaks. It is considered the universal bird seed by ornithologists and birding experts.

Can I use black oil sunflower seed year-round?
Yes. Black oil sunflower seed is ideal for year-round feeding. In winter it provides critical high-fat energy for birds staying through cold temperatures. In spring and summer it supports nesting birds and fledglings. It is one of the few seeds that attracts both resident and migratory species in every season.

Will black oil sunflower seed sprout in my lawn?
Dropped shells and uneaten seeds can sprout if they reach soil. To prevent sprouting, use a feeder tray to catch shells, rake under your feeder regularly, or switch to our hulled Sunflower Heart Chips, which are 100% edible and will not sprout.

What feeder should I use for black oil sunflower seed?
Black oil sunflower seed works in virtually any feeder — hopper feeders, tube feeders, platform feeders, and open tray feeders. For the best results attracting the widest variety of birds, a hopper or platform feeder gives birds of all sizes comfortable access. Pair with a squirrel-resistant feeder like the Duncraft Squirrel Proof Selective or the Brome Squirrel Buster Plus to keep squirrels from emptying your feeder.

PRICE DOUBLED IN 2 WEEKS
Size: 18 Count (Pack of 1), Size: 18 Count (Pack of 1)
I rescue standard poodles mostly. I also train service dogs. My pack of "poodles" has all sizes and ages. This is not for profit , it is to save lives. Until 2 weeks ago -date now is: 08/17/2022- the price of these were around 20.00. My dogs all loved them. I have a buffet table with lots of storage I use to store the treats and it has room on top for all the treat jars. In the afternoon or evening, they'd get a hard, chewy treat like ears. Standard poodles love to chew . They could finish off one of the ears in minutes. These treats are quiet large and thin. They do smell but they are natural foods. NO WAY can I afford over 40.00 for 18 ears. Did pigs go exttict? Did they quit growing ears? How could They raise the price to cost double the amount? I looked at other ears on Amazon & the other brand i get which starts with a p- has not gone up. Paws- clipping. They have some Bizarre names so guess I'll just double my order for them. I have way too many dogs to give treats to. I want to be fair to all of them. They are my kids & will get the best I can offer. I did wait a few weeks before writting this. I also dropped my Sub & Save with this.
