Scientific Name
Opuntia vulgaris (common plant from Opus)

Common Name
Indian Fig Opuntia, Barbary Fig, Cactus Pear, Spineless Cactus, Prickly Pear

Origin
Native to South America, from Brazil to Uruguay; now naturalised elsewhere including in Australia and South Africa.

Description
This cactus' unusual shape really makes it stands out. Its large leaves are shaped like paddles, round and branching off each other, usually in pairs. The blue-green colour of this cactus is interrupted by the large spikes protruding from it; watch your fingers around this one! As this plant grows, it extends upwards and outwards as more paddle-like pads are sprouted, so choose this interesting-looking shrub to put in your brightest window.

Light

Thrives best in bright light; will love your brightest windowsill (try South-facing if in doubt!).

Water

Allow all the soil to dry out between watering; if the pads curl it may have too much sun and too little water; if it starts to grow mushy or rot at the roots, likely too much water and too little sun.

Humidity
Low humidity is perfect for cacti; a hose down to clean now and again is fine as long as the plant dries and doesn't sit damp.

Soil
Needs a well-draining pot and potting mix; look for specific 'cacti and succulent' soils with plenty of sand and other well-draining materials. Only repot if absolutely necessary: use the next size pot up, repot in the spring, and no more frequently than every three years.

Food
Feed every two months in the growing season, and every three in autumn and winter. Use 'cactus' labelled feed.

Temperature

Likes temperatures of 20-32°C; don't let it drop below 10°C in winter.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
This is a flowering variety; to make it more likely you'll see the blooms, let it have a proper dormancy in autumn/winter with lower temperatures and less frequent watering and fertilising, and then increase these as the weather warms. The warmer the cactus is in summer, the more likely you'll see flowers!

Great chewy for my dogs
My 3 dogs love these already. I smeared peanut butter on one side and passed them out. My 2 that aren't crazy active or aggressive chewers enjoyed the PB, then were done for now. Energizer bunny dog has now claimed all 3 and is alternating which one she chews on. Great buy for keeping them, especially her occupied.

Would not buy again
My dog loves chew toys and was very excited when I opened the package. She played with it for about 10 minutes and now she wont touch it. It does seem very durable as she chewed on it and there was little damage.

Long lasting, not super appealing to my dogs.
Objective Data: I have two 50 pound dogs; a 10mos goldendoodle and a 7yo viszla. The puppy is a moderate chewer, the senior dog takes chewing in binges. He will occasionally get something and work it over for awhile and then not seek out anything to chew for a couple of days. Initially these went over well, but neither of my dogs pursue these much after a few weeks. The puppy will occasionally bring one over to briefly chew laying at my feet. Even with the initial, enthusiastic chewing of "new" toys these are still very intact!! These are going to last such a long time. **CAUTION** if you have beige carpet I don't recommend these toys for your home. They blend in to the color of our carpet and I cannot tell you how many times I have rolled my ankle or stubbed my toe kicking one across a dim/dark room. I would rather walk barefoot through a minefield of legos.

Keeps my dog busy
My dog has so much fun getting peanut butter out of this chew! It has small holes so it makes them put a little more effort than a typical chew. I would say it keeps them occupied for at least 15-20 minutes and they get pretty tired after. I think it's a good size for my medium dog. One thing i wish they did was making it with a silicone rather than nylon. It does get chewed off and I don't like the fact that they are ingesting them. All in all it's a great design to keep than busy.
