The oldest living thing on Earth. Grown from a seed the size of a grain of rice.

Pinus longaeva, the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine, is the oldest living non-clonal organism on the planet. Methuselah, a Bristlecone Pine growing in the White Mountains of California, has been alive for over 5,000 years. It was already ancient when the pyramids of Egypt were being built. It survived the Bronze Age, the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and every human civilization that has risen and fallen in the 5,000 years since it germinated. And it started as a seed smaller than a grain of rice. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine grows in the most extreme conditions available to any tree, at elevations above 10,000 feet, on alkaline dolomite soils with almost no available nutrients, in climates of intense cold, drought, and wind. The tree that grows slowest in the harshest conditions lives longest. If you are looking to buy Bristlecone Pine seeds or grow the world's oldest tree species from seed, this is the beginning of something measured in millennia.

  • The oldest living non-clonal organism on Earth, with documented specimens over 5,000 years old
  • Grows in extreme high-altitude conditions on alkaline soils where virtually nothing else survives
  • Extraordinarily slow-growing, adding less than an inch of trunk diameter per century in native conditions
  • Dense, resinous wood so saturated with pitch it resists decay for thousands of years after death
  • One of the most unique and collectible specimen conifers available to the serious grower

Things you probably did not know about the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine

The oldest known Bristlecone was accidentally killed by the scientist studying it. In 1964, a geography graduate student named Donald Currey was coring a Bristlecone Pine in Nevada to determine its age. His core bit became stuck and he was given permission to cut the tree down to retrieve it. When the rings were counted, the tree was found to be 4,862 years old, the oldest living organism ever documented at that time. The tree was named Prometheus and its discovery was a landmark moment in dendrochronology. It is still the oldest tree ever verified, and it no longer exists.

Dead wood persists for 10,000 years in the alpine environment. The resin-saturated heartwood of Great Basin Bristlecone Pine is so resistant to decay that fallen logs and stumps remain structurally sound on the ground for thousands of years. Dendrochronologists have assembled tree ring records extending back over 10,000 years by cross-referencing rings from living trees, recently dead trees, and preserved ancient wood, creating one of the most detailed and continuous climate records available from any natural source.

The trees grow faster when stressed. Counterintuitively, Bristlecone Pines that grow in the harshest, most nutrient-poor conditions on the rockiest, most exposed sites tend to live longer than those in relatively favorable conditions. Trees in better soils grow faster, complete their life cycle sooner, and die younger. The harsh site strips out everything except the most stress-tolerant individuals and the slowest possible growth rate, which appears to be the key to extraordinary longevity.

The bristle in the name refers to the cone scales. Each scale of a Bristlecone Pine cone ends in a slender, flexible, inch-long bristle that gives the species its common name. The bristles are a minor irritant to handle and make the cones immediately distinctive compared to any other pine. The seeds inside are small and light with a single wing adapted for wind dispersal.

Growing Details

  • Botanical Name: Pinus longaeva
  • Stratification: Required, 30 to 60 days cold stratification
  • USDA Zones: 4 to 8
  • Soil: Well-drained, rocky, tolerates alkaline and nutrient-poor conditions, requires excellent drainage
  • Light: Full sun
  • Height: 5 to 30 feet in cultivation, highly variable depending on conditions
  • Spread: 8 to 20 feet
  • Growth Rate: Very slow, 6 inches or less per year, faster in ideal lowland garden conditions than native high-altitude habitat

Plant it and mark the date clearly. The tree you start today will still be growing when everything written around it has been forgotten.

Fits Magic Keyboard Perfectly
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Slim
This is exactly the length of the Magic Keyboard and it is low to the ground. I did buy a thing that angles the Magic Keyboard slightly upwards in the back so it has a small angle and then I have this wrist rest. It is wonderful. I am so glad after all the digging and looking I found this one and bought it. I took it out of the box and didn't remove the paper on the back to make sure I liked it. I do, I love it. It is not only comfortable, it looks sleek, fits exactly and I don't get sore after hours upon hours of typing. The quality is good. I have zero complaints and feel lucky this is the first one I chose as it hit the mark.

Comfortable Wrist Rest for larger laptops.
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Mechanical & Gaming
I bought this to use with my new 17 inch MSI gaming laptop. I was getting a very sore wrist as the laptop is pretty tall. This is tall enough that it is preventing the strain on the wrist. It is comfortable and not too hard, but firm enough to support my wrists. It is long enough to fit the entire length of my laptop without being too long. The curved shape puts the extra padding on the left side where I use it most for the WASD keys, but also gives me padding on the right for when I am typing and need it there also. It has a strong durable feel to it, but is smooth and soft. The bottom is shiny and rubbery and grips my lapdesk so that it does not slip and stays right where I place it. It appears to be well constructed, and considering the price, I would expect nothing less. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone with a large laptop or gaming keyboard.

Sleek looking and feeling wrist rest
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Slim
5 Year Update: it finally had a tear on the corner and you can feel the gooey adhesive-like gel peak its way out. Not exactly sure how it happened. Could be my sharp nails or i may have grazed it with a box cutter while opening some packages. Keep sharp objects away from the pad! For now, i've put some clear tape over it to see how that holds. Still very useable. I got the slim one and it looks and feels great. It has a classy executive look to it and my wrists glide easily across it which is surprising since it's made out of some kind of vinyl/rubbery texture. It has a leather grain on it which actually feels similar to faux-leather. It looks as if it would be very easy to clean off if you get dirt and oil on it. That being said, my 3 caveats are: 1) it needs to be about 1 cm wider for full coverage on a standard 101 keyboard 2) I wish the size of the pad was the same all throughout the length, so that the wrist will have more to rest on when using the numpad 3) It could be squishier/ be more cushiony. It's actually quite stiff for a gel pad. It feels almost like you're resting your wrist on a leather bound book but with a thin layer of padding on it. This could be because its the slim version since there is less gel material. I would imagine the regular thickness version will be better cushioned. Overall, its a great pad and would fit right in on an executive desk because its understated and has a very leathery look and feel to it. Much classier than most gaming focused wrist rests and the price is right.

Comfortable wrist rest for intense use
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Mechanical & Gaming, Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Mechanical & Gaming
- You don't have to own a mechanical keyboard to grab one of these bad boys. It's suitable for any full size keyboard. - This is ergonomic and really targeting gamers. The left side of the wrist rest offers more cushion for those wasd key strokes. While the right side is much smaller vs other wrist rests Kensington offers so it won't take too much desk space. So it's quite office friendly. - Huge value for money. About $7 bucks cheaper vs the standard keyboard. - Vegan leather exterior. This is the one thing that made me buy the wrist rest. As you can see from my picture, my old wrist rest is made of fabric material. They easily build up slime and all that yuckiness when you type for long period of time. It's so hard to clean up. The leather material is just one wipe away. - Super soft and comfortable. My old wrist rest is hardened memory foam. It's not deformed after years or using, which I appreciate. But it doesn't provide much comfort vs this gel pad wrist rest. I'm so happy I made the switch and bought this. - For whoever said this is stiff or firm for their taste, they obviously haven't used other memory foam wrist rests before. So if you want soft, but not too squishy wrist rest, look expensive for office use, or survive abuse for home use, look no further.
