Philodendron holtonianum

Philodendron holtonianum is an Araceae species from Colombia, valued for its narrow juvenile blades and mature foliage that develops into a long, slender, tri-lobed form. The mature lobes stay slim, giving older leaves an elongated outline rather than a broad divided shape.

Young plants usually show simpler leaves first. With steady upward growth, bright filtered light and a vertical surface for the stem, the foliage can become much longer and more divided over time.

Philodendron holtonianum juvenile leaves and mature form

  • Family: Araceae, the aroid family.
  • Foliage: Green leaves with a narrow outline and thinly coriaceous texture.
  • Juvenile growth: Young leaves are narrow and simpler in shape.
  • Mature growth: Older leaves can become very long and tri-lobed, with narrow lobes.
  • Growth habit: Elongating climbing growth with nodes along the stem.
  • Indoor development: Mature leaf shape develops gradually as the climbing stem gains height and stability.
  • Growth rate: Moderate in warm, bright, humid conditions, slower when kept cool, dry or unsupported.
  • Safety: Toxic if chewed or swallowed by pets or children.

Mature leaf development in Philodendron holtonianum

Philodendron holtonianum moves from narrow juvenile blades into a more divided adult leaf shape as the stem extends. Mature leaves can become very long, slim and thinly leathery, with lobes that remain narrow along the blade.

In habitat, Philodendron holtonianum is associated with wet tropical forest in Colombia, where climbing stems develop in warm, humid, filtered-light conditions. Indoors, a stable support gives the stem a vertical path and helps the leaves develop with less twisting or bending.

Care for Philodendron holtonianum climbing growth

  • Light: Give Philodendron holtonianum bright filtered light. Low light can produce weak, stretched growth and delay mature leaf shape.
  • Support: Provide a pole, plank or similar vertical surface while the plant is still juvenile.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky, airy aroid mix so the climbing root system has oxygen between waterings.
  • Water: Let part of the potting mix dry before watering again. Wet roots in a dense mix can yellow the lower leaves.
  • Humidity: Higher humidity helps long new leaves unfurl with less tearing or sticking.
  • Temperature: Keep growth warm and stable; cold, wet conditions can stall the stem and damage roots.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, the mix has compacted or the support no longer fits the stem height.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth; reduce feeding when light levels and growth slow.
  • Propagation: Propagate from stem cuttings with at least one node, kept warm and humid while rooting.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves at the petiole base or shorten an overlong stem above a healthy node.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Semi-hydro can work when roots are adapted gradually and the reservoir stays clean and oxygenated.

Philodendron holtonianum unfurling issues and delayed mature leaves

  • Juvenile leaves: Simple narrow leaves are normal on young plants before the adult blade shape develops.
  • Delayed mature shape: Low light, lack of support or interrupted growth can slow the shift into the long divided form.
  • Torn new leaves: Dry air or uneven watering can make thin new blades stick while unfurling.
  • Yellowing leaves: Check the root zone for dense, wet substrate or a pot that dries too slowly.
  • Pests: Inspect new leaves and petioles for thrips, spider mites, mealybugs and scale.

Philodendron holtonianum toxicity

Philodendron holtonianum contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep leaves, petioles and stems away from pets and children that may chew plant material.

Botanical background of Philodendron holtonianum

The genus Philodendron was described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode. Its name combines Greek philo- or philein, meaning loving, with dendron, meaning tree. Schott also described Philodendron holtonianum, which was published in Bonplandia in 1859. The epithet holtonianum is formed from Holton with the Latin adjectival ending -ianum, indicating a dedication to Holton.

A Colombian climbing Philodendron with narrow juvenile growth and long, slender mature leaves that develop their divided shape on support.

Best frother on the market
This company has the best frothers I have ever used, and I have gone through my fair share of frothers over the years trying to find a good one. I bought this frother as soon as I saw they had an upgraded model, although the older model I was using for the past few years was great too (I now use that frother to mix up my dog's supplements :) ). I have found most frothers to be weak, cheaply made, and eat batteries like candy, even ones rated really well here on Amazon. This one however deserves the great reviews. It is well-made and powerful and the newly added 9 different speeds fixes the "problem" the old one had of being a little too powerful at times. The newly designed stand is definitely a major upgrade. The old one was kinda awkward and would wobble, sometimes falling over when trying to put the frother back in it, but this new one is much sturdier and looks nicer, too. The battery life is also excellent. I can rarely remember the last time I had to charge the frother—it lasts a while. And the new indicator makes it easy to know exactly when it needs a recharging now. I haven't looked at another frother in years since switching to this brand. I can't recommend their frothers enough.

✨Happy with my purchase!
At the time of writing this review, I've had my frother for almost a month now, and I love it! Out of the box, it had a good amount of charge already on it, but I did charged it fully before using. I use it just once a day for my morning coffee fix, and it says I still have 80% charge left. I love that feature. I have used the frothing whisk for coffee, which is fantastic, and the regular wisk for scrambled eggs. It works, but I prefer a hand manual whisk for eggs, because I have more control. Even on the lowest speed, it made the bowl spin WAY too much, and I almost had a mess. No problems like that using the frothing wand for my milk though. The dough hook. I have no idea why a dough hook is part of the package... what would it be useful for, one cookie, one bread roll?? I will never used it. The stand itself works for holding the unit, but the holders for the individual wands could be better. I already snapped the plastic on one of them, but not matter, since I'm not using the dough hook anyway. LOL! All in all, I'm happy with my purchase! It's easy to use and clean. It's a quality built frother, the price is fair, I like the variable speed settings, and I love the fact that it shows how much charge is left. Future product improvements I would recommend: make it waterproof, and lose the useless dough hook.

Best Frother on the Market.
With the absolute highest speed and power for a frother, this is the best frother on the market, but this model, the MF06 has three features that are great improvements over previous models. 1. LED reading of the speed setting and battery life remaining. 2. One-button stop. This is huge! Other frothers require me to cycle through the speeds 'till I get to the "off" or zero speed. This means when my coffee is at the edge almost overflowing, I have to speed-up to shut-off! Not so with this frother. 3. A loop attachment that is perfect for mixing with minimal frothing. Costumer service is excellent, highly responsive, and human! Their 2- year warranty is for real. This is my third frother with this company. The first one (an earlier model) burned out and they replaced it. Twice! They replaced the second one with an upgraded model (MF05). It worked much better, but this model, the MF06 is a slimmer design, better attachments, more features, and without a doubt, the best I the market! Highly recommend.

My third FoodVille frother in six years and this one is the best!
Apparently I have a long running relationship with milk frothers. Looking back at my Amazon orders, this is my third FoodVille frother since 2020, and they have all been part of my daily coffee routine. I make two mochas every morning, so these things get used a lot. This new MF06 model has been in daily use for about three weeks now, and it’s easily the best version I’ve owned. The biggest improvement is the adjustable speed control. Earlier models were basically one speed and you either got foam or a small milk tornado. With this one you can start slow and then increase power depending on what you’re mixing. It actually gives you control instead of just maximum blast. Things I like after using it every day: • 9 speed settings make it much more versatile • Strong motor that creates thick foam quickly • Rechargeable battery with USB-C, so no dealing with AA batteries • Battery indicator so you know when it needs charging • Multiple whisk attachments for different uses • Stand keeps everything organized on the counter The foam is thick and creamy enough that my homemade mochas now look like something from a coffee shop instead of something made by a half-awake human at 6 AM. I’ve also used it for mixing protein powder and hot chocolate, and the lower speeds help avoid splashing. The stand does take up a little counter space, but I personally like having everything organized instead of digging around in a drawer for the attachments. For around the $20 to $25 range, this has been a great little kitchen tool. After several years and multiple versions, this is the best FoodVille frother I’ve owned so far, and it gets used every single morning. What gives me confidence recommending it is that this is my third FoodVille frother since 2020, and each version has improved on the last. If you make coffee drinks at home, this is a great little tool to have.
