Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila menziesii) is a delightful heirloom annual that offers a charming display of sky-blue flowers with white centers. This low-growing plant is perfect for adding a soft touch to rockeries, garden edges, or even as a filler between rows in vegetable gardens. It’s a versatile plant that thrives in a variety of settings, including window boxes, hanging baskets, and containers. Baby Blue Eyes is a pollinator-friendly choice, attracting bees and other beneficial insects to your garden.

However, growing Baby Blue Eyes from seed can be a bit more challenging than other annuals. The seeds require careful attention to soil moisture and temperature for successful germination. This plant is best suited for cooler climates or early spring planting, as it prefers mild temperatures and can struggle in hot weather. Once established, though, it rewards gardeners with a stunning display of delicate blooms.

Common Names: Baby Blue Eyes

Latin Name: Nemophila menziesii

Type: Flower

USDA Zones: 3 - 10

Stratification: Light scarification can improve germination rates

Germination Ease: Moderate; requires cool conditions for best results

Sunlight: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Moisture: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil

Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0

Height: 4-6 inches

Spread: 6-12 inches

Color: Sky-blue petals with white centers

Bloom Season: Early to mid-spring

Potential Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets

Climate Adaptability: Best in cooler spring climates; sensitive to heat

~ Sowing ~

When to Start Inside: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. This allows for control over temperature and moisture during the critical germination phase.

When to Start Outside: Direct sow seeds in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. The seeds require cool temperatures to germinate effectively.

Sowing Instructions: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in well-drained soil. Lightly press the seeds into the soil but do not cover them fully, as they need light to germinate.

Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out, as the seeds are sensitive to moisture fluctuations.

Light and Temperature: Baby Blue Eyes prefer cooler temperatures between 55-65°F (13-18°C). Ensure sufficient light during germination to encourage strong seedling growth.

Germination: Seeds typically germinate in 14-21 days under optimal conditions. Germination can be erratic, so patience and careful monitoring are essential.

~ Transplanting Seedlings Outdoors ~

Timing: Transplant seedlings outdoors after the risk of frost has passed and when they have developed at least two sets of true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions.

Location: Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained soil. Baby Blue Eyes do best in cooler, spring-like conditions.

Spacing: Space plants 6-12 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation and growth.

Transplanting: Handle seedlings carefully to avoid disturbing their roots. Water well after transplanting to help establish the plants.

~ Growing ~

Watering: Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Baby Blue Eyes are sensitive to drought and prefer a moist environment.

Fertilizing: Apply a light application of compost or balanced organic fertilizer at planting time. Avoid heavy fertilization, as it can lead to excessive foliage with fewer blooms.

Pest and Disease Management: Baby Blue Eyes are relatively pest-resistant but may attract aphids in some cases. Monitor plants regularly and treat with organic pest control methods if necessary.

Maintenance: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming and maintain a neat appearance. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool during warmer weather.

~ Harvesting ~

When to Harvest: Baby Blue Eyes are best enjoyed in the garden, where they create a beautiful ground cover or filler between other plants.

How to Harvest: N/A (primarily enjoyed in the garden as an ornamental plant).

Drying and Storing: N/A

~ Seed Saving ~

Allow some flowers to go to seed. Once the seed pods have dried on the plant, collect the seeds and store them in a cool, dry place for future planting.

~ Additional Information ~

Forage for Pollinators: Baby Blue Eyes attract bees and other beneficial insects, making them a valuable addition to pollinator gardens.

Origin: Native to California, Baby Blue Eyes are well-adapted to a variety of climates and growing conditions.

Nomenclature: The genus name "Nemophila" comes from the Greek words "nemos" meaning grove and "philos" meaning loving, referring to the plant's natural habitat.

History: Baby Blue Eyes have been a garden favorite for generations, prized for their delicate beauty and ease of growth.

Potential Toxicity: Non-toxic and safe for humans and pets.

Climate Adaptability: Baby Blue Eyes thrive in cool spring conditions and can adapt to a wide range of climates, making them suitable for gardens in USDA zones 3-10.

A fantastic self tanning product.
I have been using this self tanner for years. So glad Amazon carries it. It's a bit tricky to use and be prepared to use in an area that is protected. Like using a drop cloth and using care with surrounding areas. It also can stain hands and feet so use gloves and cover the bottoms of your feet. The good part after all that is ,a beautiful deep rich tan. I have fooled many using this product. You cannot spray too close or it will run or not go on evenly. It also at times has faulty cans that drip and are messy. Used to that after all this time. The liquid that leaks is green. Now after all that, it does not sound all that appealing but, trying to give some guidance because it is worth the effort. I have heard rumor that it was used on the show Baywatch to give them that true sun kissed bronze look. It literally in one spraying has you tan. You can darken by using every few days. I usually spray it on before bed, let it dry well and wear overnight to let it set up and develop. It has a sort of almond scent so the smell is decent. I will mist my face alone if I just want a bit of color during the colder months before I leave the house . I just mist a bit less and let it dry. Not saying this is the most user friendly product but, will keep working around its faults to keep glowing. Best at home tan as good as a spray tan from a salon.

Beautiful bronze color!
This is a nice spray mist tan that gradually gets deeper in color within a couple hours after application. It did not make me look orange at all rather a great beach bronze color. It’s a bit difficult to spray my legs evenly all around while staying within the range/ distance it recommends in order to avoid lines, drilling and streaks. Next time I’m asking my friend to spray me. The spray mist on skin will stay on for 3 days before it begins to wear offs. I suggest exfoliating in between spray tanning

Great self-tanner -- VERY light color
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
First of all, I must confess -- I am a self-tanning junkie. Okay -- I said it. I have used MANY, MANY self-tanning products over the years. This was the first time I had purchased this brand, and I was pleased. Pleased. Not thrilled. Just pleased. The product delivers nice, good quality color. It has a pleasant feeling on the skin. Smells lovely. My ONLY complaint is this: the color was not dark or deep, which is the #1 thing I seek in a self-tanner. I want deep, dark color -- I want to appear...well....TANNED! This product simply did not deliver the dark color I was seeking. I would definitely recommend this self-tanner to anyone looking for a LIGHTLY COLORED tanning effect. This product delivers a lightly peachy-colored tan. It dries VERY quickly and evenly.

The best
Size: 12 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I’ve purchased all the best brands of self tanner at Ulta. This is the only brand I’ve used that actually doesn’t have that smell we all hate. Other brands claim to not smell but they always end up smelling, but not this one. And the tan looks so natural and amazing. Repeat buyer and will be putting this on auto ship. I would recommend the lotion however, over the spray. The spray didn’t go on as even as I hoped, but I’ll just switch back to the lotion. Just thought I’d try something different this time. The lotion is amazing.

Don’t buy this Product
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I was excited to try this product and brand overall. Product arrived within a week. Per instructions, I shook before spraying. I was shocked when it came out in big wet clumps. The color is very dark and dries quickly. I had big blotches all over my under body and quickly used the glove to blend into my skin. It didn’t blend well so I had blotches everywhere. One week later I wanted to try one more bc I did love the color it left. I was going to do smaller areas so I could blend quickly. I shook the bottle and now the sprayer wouldn’t work. Only small foamy bubbles would come out of the sprayer. I now have a heavy full can that’s worthless. I bought a second product from this company. The face self tanner and it was very dark, almost black. Didn’t blend smoothly or absorb well. Took about 2 days to exfoliate off my skin. Super disappointed. The color it left was beautiful but the consistency of application was messy and blotchy.
