Dioscorea elephantipes has gained a cult-like following among collectors and for good reason. Native to South Africa’s arid regions, this caudiciform curiosity is named for its thick, woody base—or caudex—which develops a rugged, elephant-like texture over time. It looks more like a fossil or a desert artifact than something alive, but come fall, it sends out a twining, heart-leaved vine that seems to emerge magically from its sculptural shell.

This is a long-lived, slow-growing plant with a deeply seasonal rhythm. During its active growth phase (usually fall through spring), it pushes out delicate vines that can climb several feet if given support. In summer, the foliage dies back and the plant rests—during this dormancy, it wants almost no water at all. Over time, the caudex continues to grow larger, more intricate, and more impressive with age.

Care at a Glance

  • Light: Bright indirect light to full sun; protect from harsh afternoon rays indoors

  • Water: Water sparingly only when in active growth (fall–spring); keep nearly dry during dormancy

  • Soil: Extremely well-draining mix—cactus, bonsai, or a gritty custom blend

  • Temperature: Warm and dry; protect from frost

  • Dormancy: Summer (typically drops leaves and rests)

  • Growth Habit: Twining vine from woody caudex; excellent for training up a small trellis or frame

This is a plant for patient growers and lovers of the weird and wonderful. It doesn’t demand much, but rewards attentiveness with fascinating texture, seasonal drama, and a deeply satisfying sense of longevity. Whether displayed as a potted oddity or integrated into a caudex collection, Dioscorea elephantipes is nothing short of captivating.

More Comfortable than an Airbed
Color: light gray, Size: cot
I purchased this 4-inch foam floor mattress for when grandchildren stay over. This is my 2nd one, since zi have 2 grandchildren. I don't have room for beds or bunk beds, but I have a space where I can store these. I slept on it myself several nights in a row when I had company and I found it to be much better than sleeping on an air bed. I purchased mattress covers and fitted sheets that fit the exact dimensions of the mattress and I am happy to be able to provide a perfect sleeping setup for my 2 grandchildren! If you have a place to store the mattress when it's folded (25 inches high, 31 inches wide, 12 inches deep) I recommend a 4-inch thick foam floor mattress over an air bed. In my home it is the perfect solution! Follow all the directions for allowing the mattress to reach its full thickness. It is vacuum packed and needs several hours (almost 2 days) to expand.
