Punica Granatum Seed Oil is a precious golden yellow to reddish oil that is carefully extracted from dried Pomegranate kernels. The pomegranate seed oil has a characteristic unique fatty acid composition. The high content of conjugated linolenic acid (>60% punicic acid) can be considered as the basis for its outstanding properties which makes this oil an especially interesting new active ingredient in personal care.
Pomegranate seed oil is packed full of antioxidants and contains Vitamin C, folic acid, and minerals such as calcium, potassium, and iron. As a result, Punica Granatum seed oil promotes the regeneration of cells in the two most important layers of healthy skin, the epidermis and dermis.
Pomegranate seed oil helps fight damaging free radicals and promote renewal. Also, it aids in wound healing, bolstering the immune system, and working as an anti-inflammatory, therefore, assisting in the regeneration of the skin.
Besides its unique fatty acid composition, Pomegranate seed oil also contains a number of different phytohormones, such as for example Coumestrol and Estron. Japanese scientists discovered an anti-carcinogenic effect of Punica Granatum seed oil. Another study detected the anti-carcinogenic properties of conjugated linolenic acid.
Although not being claimed directly in personal care applications, the above-mentioned health care effects imply various therapeutical properties that exceed the common and known caring and protective properties of the oil. Hence, the Pomegranate seed oil is predestined for application in anti-aging products and skin care formulations for mature skin.
In face care applications as well as in body oils Punica Granatum seed oil can be blended with appropriate carrier oils to achieve good sensory effects and a high degree of stability. Pomegranate seed oil is an oil that dries well and penetrates the skin quickly, though its spreadability is moderate.
Dosage and stability depend on the formulation type, where we generally recommend gentle incorporation at low temperatures due to the high level of unsaturated fatty acids. The cold pressed Pomegranate seed oil is the best for both conventional and organic quality.
What are the benefits of Punica Granatum Seed Oil?
The main beneficial properties of Punica Granatum seed oil include:
- Excellent anti-oxidant for anti-aging skin care applications
- Extremely useful as a protective agent for the skin against UV exposure, free radicals, and stress
- Support the natural protective systems of the body, serving as radical scavengers
- When applied topically, further skin protection can be achieved due to the penetration of gamma-linolenic acid into the lipid layers of the skin which improves the skin's barrier function and reduces transepidermal water loss.
