The spider plant (Latin name Chlorophytum comosum) may be native to tropical and southern Africa, but it has become a popular houseplant in the UK. The baby plants, called spiderettes, dangle down like spiders on a web from the mother plant, giving this plant its unusual name. The appearance of the mother surrounded by her babies has also given this plant its other nickname - the ‘hen-and-chickens’ plant!

The plant stands at a total height of around 48 cm, and has a diameter of approximately 60 cm.
