Celosia (Celosia spp.)

Celosia brings bold, velvety flower texture and saturated color that holds its look through summer heat. It is an easy way to add structure to seasonal beds because the blooms stay showy for a long time and read clearly from a distance. Many types also offer colorful foliage, so the planting still looks strong even between bloom flushes. If you want dependable warm-season impact for borders and containers, celosia is a reliable choice.

Distinctive Features

Celosia includes several popular forms, including plume, cockscomb, and wheat types, all known for uniquely textured flower heads in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and sometimes white. Plants are typically upright and well-branched with green to burgundy foliage depending on selection, and they bloom continuously from early summer until frost in many regions. The blooms are long-lasting on the plant and are also useful for cutting and drying. Mature size varies widely by type and cultivar, commonly ranging from about 8 to 24 inches tall and 8 to 18 inches wide, with some taller selections reaching about 3 feet.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun for the best color and strongest flowering, with light shade tolerated.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil, and it performs best in moderately fertile beds that do not stay waterlogged.
  • Water: Medium, water regularly to establish, then water when the top layer begins to dry, especially in containers.
  • Zones: USDA Zones 10 to 11 as a tender perennial, typically grown as an annual elsewhere.
  • Notable Traits: Heat and humidity tolerant, long-lasting blooms, and many selections perform well as cut or dried flowers.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Mass a bold block as a focal point so the textured blooms read as a strong, sculptural statement in summer beds.
  • Containers: Plant in pots and window boxes for steady color and texture that stays sharp through heat.
  • Bedding and Borders: Use in sunny beds to create a dense midseason layer of color with a clean, upright habit.
  • Cut and Dried Arrangements: Grow in rows for blooms that hold well in fresh bouquets and dry easily for lasting displays.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep moisture consistent during establishment, then avoid extremes of drought or soggy soil.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during the growing season, especially in containers, to maintain steady growth and bloom.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads if desired to keep plants tidy and encourage continued bloom.
  • Spacing: Provide airflow and avoid overcrowding to keep foliage cleaner and growth more vigorous.

Why Choose Celosia?

  • Bold Texture: Velvety, sculptural blooms add a look that standard flowers cannot replicate.
  • Heat Performance: Thrives in warm weather and keeps color strong when many annuals slow down.
  • Long Bloom Season: Flowers from early summer until frost in many climates with straightforward care.
  • Design Versatility: Works in borders, mass plantings, and containers, and many types are excellent for cutting and drying.

Celosia looks best when planted in groups, letting the texture and color read as an intentional summer feature rather than scattered accents. Pair it with fine-textured grasses and simple flowers to highlight the bold bloom shapes and keep the planting balanced. Give it sun, sharp drainage, and steady moisture, and it will stay strong through the hottest part of the season. If you want durable, high-impact summer color with standout texture, celosia delivers.

A few I loved but the rest didn't excite me
Format: Paperback
I got this book because I wasn’t sure that I wanted a book of her complete poems. This one selects from each of her volumes of poetry (she was deceased at the time of its publication). I found that I almost exclusively liked poems from her book Diving into the Wreck, which won the National Book Award. So in the end, I came away from this volume not wanting to read her complete work but wanting to read Diving into the Wreck in its entirety. This pains me somewhat. I think of Adrienne Rich as a feminist ground-breaker and icon. I came away from this realizing I probably like her essays and books tackling how women are treated more than I like her poetry. I sensed in her reserve in her poetry, that she was not wanting to bring us entirely into the impetus of the poem, holding us at a bit of a distance and not being specific. While that isn’t true of all of her poetry, that’s the feel I was getting from much of it. One thing that struck me is that in this volume, there was little evidence of her voice as an activist. I don’t know if that’s true of her poetry in general or if it’s a result of the editorial choices in this volume. Most of the poetry was very much about relationship, about how people treat each other, whether individuals or groups. Not a lot of the poetry in this volume stuck with me. I would read it and then it was gone. Out of 400 pages of poetry, I marked only 12 poems. So I was disappointed that I didn’t connect more with Adrienne Rich’s poetry, especially since her poem “Diving into the Wreck” (from the book by the same name) is one of my favorite poems. I guess more evidence that I’m a fan of specific poems more than I’m a fan of poets.
