One of the Largest Hostas for Shade Gardens.

Sum and Substance Hosta is a giant, award-winning hosta grown for its enormous chartreuse to yellow-green foliage and bold mounding habit. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves can reach impressive size, giving shaded gardens instant structure and substance. This is the hosta to choose when you want a dramatic focal point, a strong background plant, or a large foliage anchor in a woodland garden.

Chartreuse, Gold, and Green Colors That Change with Light.

The foliage color of the Sum and Substance Hosta shifts with light exposure and season. Leaves often emerge light green in spring, develop chartreuse or yellow-green tones, and may become more golden as the season progresses. Morning sun or filtered light can intensify the color, while part shade helps protect the leaves from harsh afternoon sun and keeps the foliage clean and healthy.

Bold Texture with Improved Slug Resistance.

Sum and Substance Hosta is known for large, glossy, corrugated leaves with good substance. That thicker, textured foliage can offer better slug resistance than many thinner-leaved hostas, making it a practical choice for gardeners who want a large hosta with stronger leaf durability. Slugs can still cause damage in damp shade, but this variety is often valued for its better resistance to slugs than more delicate hostas.

A Specimen Hosta with Award-Winning Garden Presence.

Named the 2004 Hosta of the Year, Sum and Substance remains a favorite because few shade perennials create this much presence with foliage alone. Use it as a specimen plant, large container feature, woodland garden anchor, shaded foundation plant, or mass planting where space allows. It pairs beautifully with ferns, astilbe, heuchera, hellebores, brunnera, carex, Japanese forest grass, bleeding heart, and other shade-loving perennials.

Low Maintenance with Honest Deer Awareness.

Sum and Substance Hosta is easy to grow in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil, but it should not be considered deer-proof. Deer commonly browse hostas, even though some sources note this cultivar may be slightly less palatable than others. Protect plants in high-deer areas, monitor for slugs early in the season, and keep the bed clean by removing dormant foliage before spring growth returns.

Tie a Knot in it if it rips
Style: Plush Surprise Color, Size: 6", Style: Plush Surprise Color, Size: 6"
My puppy split the middle belly seam in about 5 minutes of spirited play with the white foam and squeak assembly scattered about, but he loves these loofa toys - goes nuts for them. Went through a couple of the little $3 ones so I tried this big one which he ripped apart. But I tied a knot in the middle of it over the ripped part and guess what, it's better than before. He loves the whipping the big knot around. The part where it ripped was where they filled it I think but the rest of the stitching is really quite solid. Takes a beating, to a point. The little ones lasted a reasonable time before they were totally played.

Do research
Size: Small
My pups love to shred things. This was a good toy for them to satisfy their need to shred things. My dogs are on the smaller side and I went with a small. I do encourage people to do their research and not leave this toy unsupervised. If your dog eats toys they shred this might not be a good toy for you. Coconut fiber can become impacted if too much is consumed. Unlike other reviewers I didn’t notice to much of a mess outside any other toy a dog might shred.

Not Suitable for Power Chewers
Size: Large
Coconut fiber toys aren’t ideal for heavy chewers. They shred easily, can be swallowed, and may cause choking or intestinal blockages. The coffee wood is a safe durable product and loved but my dogs. I wish I would have done more research before buying the coconut fibers chew.

Dogs love them, not long lasting
Size: Large
Our dogs ignored the toy for the first day or two, then immediately became obsessed, working on them for hours at a time. They did come with big cracks/splits in them. The first one it wasn’t a big deal, but the dogs pulled large slivers and chunks off the second within minutes of using it. Also, gigantic mess around the house, like letting them play with a stick. I plan to continue to buy since the dogs love them but I do think they are a bit expensive given the quality variations.

Durable, good value, clean, natural
Size: Small, Size: Small
I bought this coffee wood toy with the coconut rope for my heavy chewer (Jack Russell Terrier) a couple of years ago. I was pretty skeptical that it would last very long and be a toy that she would enjoy. This is one of her favorite toys, it's lasted for 2+ years, and it's not gross after so much use. This dog shredded everything in sight when she was a puppy, so it was important to find her lots of different hard toys. I bought another coffee wood toy with no rope, and she doesn't care for it as much. We might have to drill a hole and add a coconut rope when this one get's too small. I have not had an issue with the coconut fibers or wood pulp, though I'm sure she's ingesting some. I have had to take away many hard toys that she managed to chew off large bits or I felt like she was eating bits of plastic, but this one has been safe for her. She was already an adult dog when I got her this toy, so I cannot vouch for how it would work for a puppy, but I suspect that it would have been a toy that I would only let her have under supervision when she was a puppy. I like that it is made from natural materials.
