Ginkgo biloba, often called the Maidenhair Tree, is a living fossil and the sole surviving member of an ancient plant lineage dating back over 200 million years. Native to China, this deciduous tree is revered for its unique, fan-shaped leaves that turn a brilliant golden-yellow in autumn. It typically reaches heights of 50–80 feet (15–24 meters) and has an upright, pyramidal form with strong disease resistance and pollution tolerance, making it an excellent choice for urban landscapes. Ginkgo is dioecious, with separate male and female trees, and only females produce the plum-like seeds. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 3–8.
To germinate Ginkgo biloba seeds, remove the fleshy outer coating and soak the seeds in warm water for 24–48 hours. Stratify them in moist sand or peat at 35–41°F (2–5°C) for 60–90 days. After stratification, plant the seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in a well-draining potting mix and maintain a warm temperature of 70–75°F (21–24°C). Keep the soil evenly moist and provide bright, indirect light. Germination may take several weeks to a few months. Once seedlings have established strong roots and several leaves, transplant them into larger containers before moving outdoors.
