Echeveria elegans, commonly known as Mexican Snowball or Mexican Gem, is a beautiful and popular succulent that is native to the semi-desert regions of Mexico. It forms compact rosettes of thick, fleshy, bluish-green to silver-green leaves that are spoon-shaped and can reach up to 6cm long and 2cm wide. These leaves take on a lovely pink blush when grown in bright sunlight, making them even more striking.

Mexican Snowball is a variable species with several forms, but all share the same characteristics of producing slender, up to 30cm tall, pinkish stems that bear pinkish-red flowers tipped with yellow from late winter to mid-summer. The plant offsets freely and forms a dense carpet of rosettes over time, making it an ideal choice for rockeries, succulent gardens, or as part of a fairy garden. It is also a great potted plant, either on its own or in an arrangement.

This cultivar has a clumping habit, and mature plants will have five or more pups that start appearing in autumn. It is a medium-sized succulent that forms a tight rosette, approximately 15cm in diameter. In winter, the rosette tightens, and the color changes to light pink on the outside of the leaves, adding to its visual appeal.

Mexican Snowball requires full sun to part shade, with the sunnier the position, the more compact the plant. Established plants in the ground are hardy and can withstand extended periods of dry weather, though, to avoid bottom leaves drying out, it should be watered once or twice per week. Pot plants need to be watered more often during dry spells, but make sure the soil is dry to touch before watering again.
