Philodendron dolichogynium, anterior sp. Macas, is a new, striking species from southeastern Ecuador, recently introduced into cultivation.
It produces long and narrow leaves, exceeding 100 cm in length. The leaf stalks are especially elongated, which helps the plant stretch to receive light as it grows as an epiphyte in nature.
This variety has nectar-producing glands on the back of the leaves. The nectar serves to attract ants searching for food – thus, the plant gains chemical substances secreted by them, but also benefits from the aggressive way ant colonies defend their territory and food source, protecting the philodendron from other harmful insects.
Note: Stock specimens may have leaves with defects.
