The Umbrella Palm Plant is an ornamental sedge that reaches heights of 5 feet or more. It is an attractive plant that produces rigid stems topped with thin ribbon-like leaves radiating outward from a central point and arranged like the ribs of an umbrella. The upright growth habit of the Umbrella Palm Plant injects a vertical architectural element to any pond or water garden, making it an excellent accent plant that complements pond rockwork and other hardscape. It can also be strategically planted as a living screen to obscure views of unsightly pond equipment.

The Umbrella Palm Plant is a moisture-loving plant so be sure to keep the roots constantly wet when treated as a house plant or patio plant. When adding the Umbrella Palm Plant to your pond or water garden, pot the Umbrella Palm Plant in a 2 to 5 gallon planting container and set the planter in your pond so it is covered by 1 to 6 inches of water. The Umbrella Palm Plant does best under full sun conditions but will tolerate partial shade conditions. However, under partial shade conditions the Umbrella Palm Plant will tend to lose vigor and growth may be slower and stunted. The Umbrella Palm Plant will typically have a spread of between 12" and 48".

Similar to other Papyrus plants, the Umbrella Palm Plant demonstrates a unique method of propagation. When the stem of the Umbrella Palm Plant bends over and the leafy bracts touch the water, it will eventually create a new plantlet. If you want to speed up this process, remove a stem from the parent plant and trim the leaves at the top of the stem. Submerge the trimmed leaf end of the stem in water (making sure the "stick" end of the stem is out of the water). In a few weeks new stems will form from the submerged plantlet.

The Umbrella Palm Plant is not cold tolerant and must be over-wintered indoors in areas that experience freezing winters. Remove the Umbrella Palm Plant from the pond in the autumn and maintain as a tropical houseplants until spring. Zones 9-11.
