Aloe x spinosissima, a South African hybrid, is a moderately-sized aloe reaching about 3 ft. tall and spreading into clumps of similar width. Despite its name suggesting spines, its teeth along the leaf margins are not large or sharp. With fleshy, grey-green leaves that taper to a point, it forms wide-spreading clumps as new rosettes emerge from the base of old ones. Flowering in late winter to early spring, it produces tall spikes of reddish-pink or coral-colored tubular flowers, adding a dramatic flair to its appearance. Originating from an old hybrid, its precise origins are uncertain, but it has been cultivated since at least the 1930s. Aloe x spinosissima requires full sun, well-drained soil, and sparing watering, making it suitable for landscapes in mild climates. Hardy to temperatures of 22-25 F, it can tolerate occasional sub-zero temperatures but not substantial frost. Best planted where it can spread out, it complements ornamental grasses and contrasts with other plant shapes and colors, making it a valuable addition to gardens or as a houseplant, particularly in cooler climates.
