Summary: With its trailing stems dotted in round, silvery-green leaves, this low-maintenance epiphyte brings soft texture and movement to shelves, hanging pots, or terrariums. Ideal for plant lovers who want a unique, pet-safe trailing plant that thrives in European homes.
✨ Why You'll Love the Dischidia nummularia
- Trailing growth with coin-shaped leaves in a cool silvery green
- Compact and lightweight—perfect for vertical spaces or kokedama
- Pet-safe and non-toxic: great for households with curious cats or dogs
- Low-fuss epiphyte that adapts well to indoor climates
- Highly decorative in modern, boho, or minimal interiors
🌞 Light & Placement
Prefers bright, indirect light—ideal near east or west-facing windows. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. Excellent for hanging planters or high shelves where it can cascade freely.
💧 Water & Humidity
Let the top 2–3 cm of the substrate dry out between waterings. As a semi-succulent, Dischidia stores moisture in its fleshy leaves and dislikes soggy roots. Thrives in moderate to high humidity—occasional misting helps in dry indoor air.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining epiphyte or orchid mix with added bark or perlite. It does well in slatted hanging baskets, kokedama, or mounted on wood, mimicking its natural habitat.
🐾 Toxicity & Safety
Completely pet-safe! No harmful compounds, making it a worry-free addition for pet parents.
🌱 Growth & Propagation
Slow to moderate trailing growth. Can reach over 1 meter in length over time. Easily propagated by stem cuttings in water or sphagnum moss—perfect for sharing with plant friends!
📆 Seasonal & Special Care
Growth slows in cooler months—water less frequently during winter. Dischidia love stability, so avoid moving them often. Repot only when rootbound (every 2–3 years).
🐛 Common Issues
Watch for mealybugs or root rot if overwatered. If leaves wrinkle or soften, you're likely underwatering. A quick shower under lukewarm water can help remove pests naturally.
🧬 Botanical Background
Native to tropical Southeast Asia and Australia, Dischidia nummularia is an epiphytic plant from the Apocynaceae family, often found clinging to tree trunks and rocks in humid forests. Its name comes from the Latin "nummus" (coin), thanks to its charming round leaves.
