Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) - A native of the Mediterranean region, Clary Sage is a herb valued for its essential oils. Often called the “Clear Eye Plant,” its seeds were traditionally soaked to make a solution used to remove foreign particles from the eyes. In most regions of Canada, this species behaves as a biennial, flowering in its second year; however, it can act as a soft perennial in zones 6b and above. We have observed plants surviving multiple seasons in zone 5 of the Maritimes. Ken selected our initial seed source from a stand of plants near Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. Clary Sage develops very large leaves and produces tall lavender-blue flowering spikes in its second year. The fragrant flowers are highly attractive to pollinators.

Growing Instructions: Cold stratification is beneficial for improved germination. Mix seeds with a slightly moist medium and refrigerate for 2–4 weeks before sowing.
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost or direct sow in fall. Plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep and keep in darkness until germination, maintaining temperatures of 18–23°C. Seeds germinate slowly, typically in 14–21 days.
Transplant or thin seedlings to 45–60 cm apart in full sun with well-drained soil. Clary sage prefers dry to moderate conditions and does not tolerate overly wet soil.
