Dypsis lutescens, widely known as the Areca Palm, Butterfly Palm, or Golden Cane Palm, is one of the most popular indoor palms thanks to its graceful, arching fronds and lush tropical presence. A member of the Arecaceae family, it is native to Madagascar, where it grows in warm, humid forests.

The Areca Palm features multiple slender, bamboo-like golden stems topped with feathered fronds of soft green leaflets that arch outward elegantly, resembling butterfly wings — hence the name Butterfly Palm. Indoors, it forms a dense, bushy clump that brings a sense of movement, freshness, and natural vibrancy to any space.

Fast-growing, air-purifying, and non-toxic, Dypsis lutescens is one of the best choices for creating a relaxed, tropical atmosphere in homes, conservatories, and offices.

Dypsis lutescens (Areca Palm) – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Tolerates partial shade but avoid deep shade, which can lead to weak, sparse growth. Direct midday sunlight can scorch the fronds, while morning or filtered sunlight helps maintain vibrant green leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist during spring and summer but never waterlogged. In winter, water sparingly. The Areca Palm is sensitive to overwatering and prefers good drainage.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 12°C.

  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Mist occasionally, especially in dry indoor conditions, to prevent brown leaf tips.

Soil and Potting

Use a rich, free-draining, peat-free compost mixed with perlite or sand to improve drainage. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, using a slightly larger pot to accommodate root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Do not feed during winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any brown or yellowing fronds at the base to keep the plant tidy and encourage new growth. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their natural gloss.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast grower, typically reaching 1.5–2.5 metres indoors. Outdoors in tropical climates, it can grow up to 6 metres tall. Its dense, feathery foliage gives it a soft, elegant silhouette that works beautifully as a focal plant.

Common Issues

  • Brown tips: Low humidity or build-up of salts from hard water — use rainwater or filtered water if possible.

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Leaf spotting: Caused by draughts, cold, or direct sunlight.

  • Pests: Occasionally spider mites, mealybugs, or scale insects.

Background and Benefits

Native to Madagascar, Dypsis lutescens has been a favourite ornamental palm worldwide for over a century. In addition to its tropical beauty, it’s an excellent natural air purifier, known to remove toxins like formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene from the air. Its elegant fronds and soft movement make it a calming presence in any interior environment.

    It’s an “OK” watch.
    Color: Black
I just received this watch. The watch fits well and is comfortable, light weight and is thinner than others I have had, which I actually like. There is no manual and trying to find one on line is a tall order. I just fiddled around with it to figure it out. Still working on some of the features. It apparently has two time settings which is good if you travel to other time zones without having to reset your time. Just hit the button. Speaking of the buttons, they are pretty tough to push. The display is so-so; some may have difficulty reading it although the numbers for the time are larger. It’s a decent watch but being worth $42 remains to be seen. I was a bit unhappy to receive the watch in an Amazon paper bag envelope. The box was crushed but the watch was in tact. It really should have been shipped in a box.

    Perfect watch
    Color: Black
This is the perfect watch for me. No negative issues at all. It's light, comfortable, easy to read, accurate, and tells me exactly what I want to know, even in the dark. I like that the seconds can be reset to zero with the push of a button. That makes it easy to set the time to the second. Battery replacement is simple. No pressing the back on with a watch press. I will agree the buttons are a bit stiff, but then I can't accidentally press 'em by flexing my wrist.

Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking
    Color: Green/Black
I love this watch despite the fact that it is really a toy. I love the look of the watch, I love how lite the weight of the watch is on my wrist, and it really does keep good time if you manage the solar charge properly. Other than looking cool on your wrist, this watch has absolutely no functions other than time keeping. The black plastic bezel is molded into the case and does not turn, so don't plan on using that. The watch has no light, the dial numbers are non-luminous and the hands are very limited in terms of luminosity. No buttons. All you can do is adjust the time and date by pulling out what used to be a winding stem in the good old days. The small tag on the strap with Geographic coordinates shown on it indicate the location of the old Timex manufacturing facility (SW of Waterbury, CT). I have a nice ledge at my bedroom window and it gets good western sun for a good part of the day regardless of the time of year. On this ledge you will find a half dozen solar powered watches (mostly Casio) properly aligned to maximize the charge they may receive each day. Note that the description for this Timex watch specifically states that a lightbulb won't charge this watch. You need direct sunlight for several hours if you want to get more than a 3-week charge into this watch. So, I'll leave you with a couple of tips, my friends; 1.) If you are looking for a first watch to give your outdoorsy oriented Son or Daughter, then give them this one. Why? Because it is cool looking, fairly well built, and it actually works, 2.) After you receive your Timex watch, be sure to keep the display mount it is packaged with. It makes a great fixture to mount your watch on for charging and allows you to maximize the position of the solar cells on the dial so that you can optimize charging time. Have Fun! Jimmy

Excellent value, flawless performance for well over a year and no signs of quitting.
    Color: Green/Black
Excellent value, had this for well over a year and it still keeps perfect time, still water resistant. No worries about having to change batteries. Owned a fancy expensive (battery) watch once and the dept. store repair intentionally sabotaged the watch in the hopes I would purchase another from them. Yeah, good luck with that, lost my business forever. This is the 21st century, cell phones are the new time pieces, but solar is totally reliable and Timex makes it happen. Holds a charge for many months, although I prop it in a bright window for a few days every few months or so just to make sure the cells are always fully charged, although it's probably unnecessary, just being over cautious. I haven't actually experienced this watch ever running out of power even after months of use. Damn impressive, as it should be.
