(Lupinus albus) I am surprised by the number of people I talk to who aren't familiar with Lupine as a food crop, even those deep down the rabbit hole of unusual regional foods. We first encountered them on the coast of Portugal almost two decades ago, where the large seeds are cooked and brined as a salty snack you might find alongside olives and pickled vegetables. Known as Lupini in Italy, they are fairly common throughout parts of the Mediterranean, Egypt and North Africa, and South America. We have tried to grow Lupini in the past and frankly, the amount of work that went into making them palatable was discouraging.

The large seeded varieties most commonly used for Lupini have very high levels of alkaloids that make them not only toxic but unpalatably bitter. They require a process of soaking and rinsing many times over many days to leach out the alkaloids and frankly, never felt worth the trouble on a home scale.

Varieties of "sweet lupines" have been developed in several parts of the world by researchers as a high protein forage crop for grazing, but in the UK it is also being worked on as an alternative legume for human use. It's a low-input crop with up to 35-40% dry material protein content at harvest, and while having a significantly smaller seed than the larger varieties it is bitter-free. We were able to source some seeds from Real Seeds in the UK, a stalwart of vegetable biodiversity, in early 2022 and managed a successful crop with surprisingly high yields, 10# from just about 35 plants. Although its a new crop for us and we are just beginning to work with it, we decided to make it available as it is not very readily available in North America. We look forward to hearing back from you if you try it. Spring sown, Late-summer harvest. 2-3.5' tall.

Growing Info

SOWING:

Seeds can be sown as soon as the soil can be worked in the early Spring.

Sow in flats indoors and transplant 4-6 weeks before last frost.

Note: Fully saturated cold soil can cause big fleshy seeds to rot, so waiting for a dryish spell in regions that see a lot of precipitation in the early spring, (like here in the PNW) is recommended for good emergence.

PLANTING DEPTH:

1/2-1"

SPACING:

1 seeds per 6-8"

EMERGENCE:

5-14 days @ soil temp 50-75F

LIGHT:

Full sun to part shade

FERTILITY:

Low to medium. Legumes are able to produce their own usable nitrogen from atmospheric nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria that colonize specialized nodules in their roots. Too much soil fertility can cause excessive vegetative growth at the expense of pod set. High nitrogen can also produce more disease-susceptible plants.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

While ornamental Lupines are perennial, these are generally grown as annuals.

Plant out when 4-5" tall.

They can get rather large and may benefit from support.

Great fit
Size: 13, Color: Ironstone Canvas/Ivory
I picked these up at a reduced price. Speedy delivery. I work in retail and I'm on my feet all day. I have wide feet so I purchased a size larger. They are very comfortable. These were a perfect addition to my wardrobe.

Comfortable and Looks Great
Size: 8.5, Color: Optic White Canvas/Optic White
These shoes are very comfortable and light. Also good price for a nice decent shoe line that’s not made cheaply. I like the quality and the comfort of these shoes.

Not very good quality. They are comfortable but they make this weird clicking sound when I walk. Wouldn’t buy them again.

Another winner
Size: 13, Color: Black Canvas/Ivory
I am a big fan of Cole Haan and these are no exception. As a person normally wearing a 13 wide, I appreciate the extra room in the toebox -- with the standard size 13. As a custom insole wearer, they work great. I will say the black laces is a safe choice, but a little boring in my opinion. I ended up switching them out with off-white laces, which I think gives them a little pop.
