Philodendron brandtianum is a climbing species native to the tropical forests of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador. It grows along tree trunks in warm, humid environments, using aerial roots to secure itself while ascending toward the canopy in search of brighter, filtered light.
Leaves are heart-shaped with a matte to slightly velvety surface, coloured olive-green and overlaid with distinct silvery-grey variegation between the veins. Juvenile leaves tend to have stronger variegation, while mature foliage may become larger and show more elongated proportions when grown with vertical support.
In its native range, the plant produces aroid inflorescences consisting of a spadix surrounded by a spathe, though it is cultivated primarily for its foliage. Providing a climbing structure encourages larger leaf development and a more vigorous growth habit.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid prolonged direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged; allow the top layer to dry slightly before watering again.
- Humidity: Prefers humidity above 60% for optimal growth.
- Media: Use a free-draining aroid mix with bark, perlite, and organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18–27 °C; avoid prolonged exposure below 15 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the container; add a moss pole or trellis for climbing growth.
