Stromanthe rolandicus is an elegant, lesser-seen member of the prayer plant family, grown for its elongated, softly patterned leaves and graceful, upright habit. Compared with more boldly variegated Stromanthe and Calathea varieties, rolandicus has a calmer, more refined look, making it ideal for growers who appreciate subtle foliage and movement rather than high contrast.

Like its relatives, it originates from tropical rainforest environments, where warmth, humidity and consistent moisture are the norm.

Plant Description

Stromanthe rolandicus produces long, lance-shaped leaves with a smooth, slightly satin surface. The upper leaf surface is typically soft to mid green, sometimes with gentle tonal variation or faint patterning, while the undersides often show a muted reddish or purplish tint. The overall effect is understated but very elegant.

Leaves emerge on slender petioles from a clump-forming base, giving the plant a neat, upright and lightly arching form. As a prayer plant, the foliage moves subtly in response to light, lifting and folding slightly in the evening and opening again during the day.

Growth is steady rather than fast, and the plant maintains a tidy, well-balanced shape when conditions are right.

Light Requirements

Bright, indirect light is ideal. A position near an east-facing window works particularly well, or a bright spot set back from a south- or west-facing window.

Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves and cause fading or crisp edges. In lower light, the plant will survive but growth slows and leaf colour may become duller.

Watering

Stromanthe rolandicus prefers consistently moist compost, but it must never sit in waterlogged soil. Allow the top couple of centimetres of the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly.

This plant is sensitive to water quality. Using rainwater, distilled or filtered water is strongly recommended, as tap water salts and fluoride can lead to brown leaf tips and edges.

Never allow the plant to dry out completely. Prolonged dryness can cause leaf curl, browning and stress, while overwatering can quickly lead to root problems.

Temperature & Humidity

Warmth and humidity are essential. Stromanthe rolandicus thrives in stable temperatures between 18–26°C and should be kept away from cold draughts, open windows and unheated rooms. Temperatures below 15°C can cause stress and leaf damage.

High humidity is very important. This plant performs best with humidity above 60%. Low humidity is the most common cause of brown edges, curling leaves and general decline. A humidifier is highly recommended, especially during winter.

Good airflow is important, but avoid placing the plant near radiators, heaters or air-conditioning vents.

Soil & Potting

A moisture-retentive yet airy growing medium is ideal. The roots enjoy consistent moisture but also need oxygen. A mix of peat-free compost or coco coir with added perlite and a small amount of bark works well.

Choose a pot with good drainage holes and avoid oversizing. Repot only when the plant becomes root-bound, ideally in spring or early summer. Stromanthe species dislike frequent root disturbance.

Feeding

Feed lightly during the growing season. From spring through early autumn, apply a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser every four to six weeks. Overfeeding can cause leaf burn and mineral build-up, especially on sensitive foliage.

Do not feed during winter when growth slows.

Pruning & Maintenance

Remove yellowing, damaged or heavily browned leaves at the base using clean scissors. This keeps the plant tidy and allows it to focus energy on healthy new growth.

Gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust. Avoid leaf shine products, which can clog leaf pores and damage foliage.

Common Issues & Sensitivities

Brown leaf edges are usually caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering or poor water quality. Curling leaves often indicate dryness or temperature stress. Faded colour typically points to insufficient light.

Spider mites can appear in dry conditions, making humidity management especially important.

Propagation

Propagation is done by division, usually at repotting time. Each division should have its own roots and several healthy leaves. Stromanthe rolandicus cannot be propagated from cuttings.

Overall Care Summary

Stromanthe rolandicus is a graceful, foliage-focused houseplant best suited to growers who can provide high humidity, consistent moisture and stable conditions. While not the easiest plant, it is deeply rewarding when its needs are met, offering elegant leaves, gentle movement and a refined tropical feel.

Madison Deserved Better
Format: Kindle
Madison was a beta...except she wasn't any longer. She was a late presenting Omega. And she was struggling. She was tall and thin, not tiny and curvy. She was opinionated. She was everything an Omega was not. After suffering through her first heat, her friends took her to Ardor, a club where Omegas came to safely find Alphas. She's not expecting much but then she connects with a sexy beta. And when she meets his Alphas, they set her body on fire. Maybe, she's found her no-strings-attached heat pack. Maybe, she's found something more. I could not connect with the characters in this book, so their story never resonated with me. And there was no love story; there was sex. Grey made it clear from the beginning that he had a true love and it was his beta boy, Rian. He went so far as to reassure Rian “Say the word, I’ll never touch her again. Lucas can put the babies in her. I only need you, beta boy”. So, Madison was there for babies, no emotions needed. Nice. No, thank you. I want the Omega to be the center of their world, not an incubator. Lucas and Rian weren't any better. After her heat, they let her leave. Not one of them made her feel valued. No one gave her a reason to stay or even offered a cuddle. And the sex didn't even come across as mind-blowing. Madison deserved better.

Pretty Darn Good
Format: Kindle
So I’ve been on a omega kick and this definitely hit the spot. Madison was frustrating at times with how she acted towards Lucas, Gray, and Rian. It was like she said towards the end, she didn’t believe she deserved nice things. It would have been nice to hear from her best friends again. They kind of were there in the beginning and the gone except for mention of text messages received from them. I feel like her friends would have been great help in encouraging Madison to go with the pack and never give Brent another chance because he was toxic. I loved Rian. His personality was awesome. His humor. His ability to make Madison comfortable whenever she was feeling overwhelmed. And the fact he fell for her and she fell for him first. They are cute together. I do feel like Lucas was the odd man out though. Like Lucas didn’t develop as much of a relationship with Madison. I would have really liked to see more development in the relationship between them. It was also the same with him and Rian. There is really no relationship displayed. Most of the relationship being displayed is between Rian and Gray. Nevertheless, I loved reading about the dynamic that came to fruition during the entirety of this story. Madison finally got her happiness. And Brent finally got punched in the face. Everyone got exactly what they deserve.

Pack's Promise was okay but not great
Format: Kindle
Pack's Promise was okay but not great. I won't recommend it to anyone that I know. PRO: * Very likable characters * Lots of steamy scenes that are written very well * The spelling and grammar are good * The punctuation is good with the exception of using hyphens instead of commas. Lots of hyphens. Lots and lots of hyphens. CON: * Almost no interactions with any characters outside of Madison and the pack * Nearly no plot. They meet, get together for a heat, agree to make it permanent, done * Quite a few typos such as extraneous words, missing words and words out of order THINGS TO KNOW: * More steamy scenes than storytelling * A lot of MM & MMM, some MFMM during heat
