Who Is Diego Brando? The Story Behind the Dio Plush
Diego Brando, nicknamed "Dio" and often called "Dino" by fans for his dinosaur stand JoJo powers, is the secondary antagonist of Part 7: Steel Ball Run in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, written by Hirohiko Araki. Set in an alternate universe version of 1890 America, Steel Ball Run follows a cross country horse race with a $50 million grand prize, where Diego enters as a celebrated British jockey riding his beloved horse Silver Bullet.
Diego's backstory is one of the most tragic in the series. Born into extreme poverty, his father abandoned the family, and his mother endured horrific conditions to keep him alive, even cutting off her own hands to fashion a makeshift bowl so her son could eat rather than sacrifice the dignity of using his shoes. This traumatic childhood forged Diego into a cold, calculating, and fiercely ambitious young man who vowed to rise above his station no matter the cost.
His Stand, Scary Monsters JoJo fans recognize instantly, grants him the ability to transform himself and others into dinosaurs. Originally belonging to Dr. Ferdinand, Diego inherited the power through the Saint's Corpse Left Eye, gaining enhanced speed, strength, and razor sharp senses. This dinosaur stand JoJo ability makes him one of the most dangerous rivals that protagonists Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli face throughout the race. Diego's cunning nature means he shifts allegiances constantly, even working for President Funny Valentine before ultimately betraying him in pursuit of his own goals.

FAQ: Diego Brando and Steel Ball Run
Scary Monsters is Diego Brando's Stand in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run. It grants him the power to transform himself and others into dinosaurs through physical contact. Originally belonging to Dr. Ferdinand, Diego inherited the ability after acquiring the Saint's Corpse Left Eye. In dinosaur form, Diego gains dramatically enhanced speed, strength, and sensory abilities, including exceptional "dynamic vision" that lets him detect movement with incredible precision. He can create full dinosaur transformations or shift into a hybrid human dinosaur form, and can even fossilize transformed beings into hardened dormant states. The Stand's name references the David Bowie album "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)."
The Steel Ball Run anime adaptation, produced by David Production, premiered globally on Netflix on March 19, 2026. The first episode ran for 47 minutes. The anime was announced on April 12, 2025, during the JOJODAY celebration event. It features returning staff from the Golden Wind adaptation, including co directors Yasuhiro Kimura and Hideya Takahashi, with music composed by Yugo Kanno. Additional episodes have been announced for later in 2026.
Diego Brando is the alternate universe counterpart of Dio Brando, appearing in Part 7: Steel Ball Run. While both share a similar name, nickname "Dio," and a background rooted in poverty and ambition, they are fundamentally different characters. The original Dio is a vampire who uses the Stone Mask and the Stand "The World" to stop time, while Diego is a human jockey who wields the dinosaur stand Scary Monsters. Diego's personality is more nuanced as a fierce rival rather than a purely villainous figure. His motivations stem from deep childhood trauma rather than innate malice. Interestingly, an alternate universe version of Diego later appears wielding "The World," connecting the two characters thematically.
In the 2026 Steel Ball Run anime, Diego Brando is voiced by Kaito Ishikawa in the Japanese dub and Damien Haas in the English dub. This is a notable casting change from the video games (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven and All Star Battle R), where Diego was voiced by Takehito Koyasu, the same actor who voices the original Dio Brando and DIO. Ishikawa previously voiced Sale in the Vento Aureo (Golden Wind) anime adaptation.
Diego Brando was born in 1870 in England to an extremely poor family. His father Dario was abusive and eventually abandoned the family. Diego's mother was forced to work as a farmhand, where her employer demanded sexual favors which she refused. In retaliation, he sabotaged their food bowls so they could not eat. When young Diego suggested using their shoes as bowls, his mother refused to sacrifice their dignity and instead cut off her own hands to fashion a makeshift container for her son. This sacrifice left a permanent mark on Diego, driving his ruthless ambition to rise above poverty at any cost. Despite his cold exterior, Diego's reverence for his mother remains one of his defining traits.
