This plant is the most widespread and one of the most beautiful species of the genus Lily (Lilium), which gave its name to the Liliaceae. It is native to the Levant, but has always been cultivated in gardens because of the beauty of its flowers, an emblem of virginal purity. There are several varieties, the main ones being: the double-flowered Lily; the bloody Lily, which has petals marked with purple lines or spots; and the variegated-leaved Lily.
