Fatsia japonica

Fatsia japonica is a woody evergreen shrub with large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves carried on long petioles. Young plants already show the bold leaf outline that makes the species easy to recognise: broad blades, deep lobes and a rounded spread from a central stem system.

In a pot, Fatsia japonica stays smaller than outdoor garden specimens, but it still develops as a real shrub with woody stems and expanding petiole layers. Its leaves can become broad and heavy with age, and enough root room gives the foliage space to open naturally.

Quick facts about Fatsia japonica

  • Evergreen shrub in the Araliaceae family with large, glossy, palmate leaves.
  • Leaves usually have several deep lobes and a leathery texture that holds well indoors.
  • Native to South Korea, Japan and the Nansei-shotō region, where it grows in mild, humid conditions.
  • Mature outdoor plants can produce rounded clusters of pale flowers followed by dark fruit.

Broad lobed leaves and woody shrub growth

Fatsia japonica grows from woody stems that gradually branch and lift the foliage away from the pot. The leaves are arranged on long stalks, which gives the plant an open, layered outline with clear space between each blade. Older stems can be pruned to encourage fresh shoots if the plant becomes too tall or bare at the base.

Its native range and shade tolerance suit bright filtered light and cooler indoor conditions. The large leaf surface can mark in harsh midday sun behind glass, and very dry heat can make the edges look tired. Indoors, stable moisture, a draining mix and enough room for new leaves keep the broad growth clean.

Care for broad leaves and woody stems

  • Light: Place in bright indirect light or gentle partial shade. Strong direct sun can brown the large leaf surfaces, especially behind glass.
  • Water: Water thoroughly once the upper part of the substrate has begun to dry. Keep the root ball lightly moist during active growth, with good drainage around the roots.
  • Substrate: Use a humus-rich, airy potting mix with drainage material such as bark, pumice or perlite so the woody root system has moisture and oxygen.
  • Temperature: Moderate household temperatures suit it well. Keep it away from hot radiators and cold draughts, which can stress the broad leaves.
  • Humidity: Average to slightly raised humidity is enough when watering is steady. Dry air shows first as dull leaf edges or faster moisture loss from the pot.
  • Pruning: Cut back overlong stems in spring or during active growth to encourage branching and keep the shrub balanced.
  • Repotting: Move into a larger pot when watering becomes difficult or roots fill the container. A stable, heavier pot steadies the broad top growth.

Leaf and stem problems to check

  • Brown leaf edges: Check for direct sun, dry heat, irregular watering or a cramped root ball. Move the plant slightly back from the window and water more evenly.
  • Soft yellowing leaves: Inspect the substrate before watering again. A pot that stays wet for too long can reduce root oxygen and cause older leaves to fail.
  • Drooping leaves: Check both moisture and temperature. A dry root ball, cold draught or sudden heat load can all make the heavy petioles sag.
  • Leggy stems: Increase light gently and prune above a node to stimulate new shoots lower on the plant.

Pet and household safety

Fatsia japonica is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses by ASPCA. Eating any houseplant material can still cause mild stomach upset, so damaged leaves and prunings should be kept away from curious pets and children.

Botanical name background

Fatsia japonica belongs to Araliaceae. The species was first described as Aralia japonica before being placed in Fatsia. The genus name comes from a Latinised Japanese name for the plant, while japonica means “of Japan”.

Fatsia japonica develops broad glossy leaves on a woody evergreen shrub with a clear layered outline.

Lightweight sunscreen for face, 30 spf, everyday mix with foundation
Style: Face Lotion - SPF 30, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Great sunscreen and it is travel size! This suscreen is 30 spf, has a yellow tint, which works well as a facial sunscreen, while toning redness. It mixes well with three types of foundations. It is not sticky, absorbs well. Smells good.

VERY GOOD, but not for me ┐('~`ˇ)┌
Style: Face Lotion - SPF 30, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
PRODUCT [Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Lotion Sunscreen for Face SPF 30 1.7oz] PROs - Was delivered on time + well packaged + undamaged - Was a described/depicted per Amazons description (design and color is exactly as shown in the product picture) - Rubs/dissolves into face well - Felt slightly "weightless" - NO WHITE CAST - Felt moisturizing - GOOD price for the amount and value - VEGAN!! DID NOT BREAK OUT my picky, sensitive skin! CONs - Felt kinda "greasy" to me Overall, the product was GOOD, BUT JUST WASN'T FOR ME. The primary face moisturizer I use is oil based, and something that is a must for my skin (My skin loves my moisturizer). SO, having an oil based moister, and a GREASY sunscreen, is gonna be a no for me.

3 in 1 Deal: Moisturizer, Sunscreen, and No White Cast!!
Style: Face Lotion - SPF 30, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Face Lotion - SPF 30, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Short Review: It’s affordable and dark-skin friendly! A rich moisturizing lotion texture, lightly fragranced, with no white cast. If you have oily skin, you don't even need to moisturize beforehand, just skip straight to this sunscreen after cleansing. (Probably wouldn't be the same for people with dry skin). It’s at first tacky but it dries down to a smooth finish. Though this does have a shine to it that leaves your skin with a healthy dewy glow, if you have super oily skin like me, do follow up with a powder. If not after a couple of hours you’ll go from glowy to a grease soaked donut. The Story: I was shocked that the bottle was tiny/the size of my hand (funny when I’ve been through this shock at least a hundred times when trying sunscreens from Korean and Japanese brands) but rest assured, it does do its job (at least for me) and is affordable. I’ve struggled with finding a decent sunscreen for a good year now. I’ve tried Neutrogena Clear Face (baaad breakout), Biore Aqua Rich (breakout), Nieva UV Super Water Gel (breakout), Frudiva (okay no breakouts but heavily scented, thick lotion, and left me super shiny), Hada Labo (beautiful lightweight texture but made me break out)—basically the struggle was real. Until I landed on Australian Gold tinted sunscreen. That stuff is magic, keeps me matte, and makes my skin look better but the darkest shade has a gray undertone so I have to follow it up with bronzer. This sunscreen is perfect for when I don’t want to deal with the hassle of wearing my tinted sunscreen, am going out to run a quick errand, or when I’m staying indoors the entire day. The pump is super useful, especially if you do the two finger method application method. It comes out a yellowish color but once you rub it in, it easily disappears into the skin. At first, it feels tacky, almost as if you’ve applied a serum, but within 1-3 minutes it dries down to a smooth finish. It does leave a shine but nothing that a sebum or setting powder can’t handle for 4-5 hours. The big pointer is that so far no breakouts but I’ve been using this only for two days so I’ll update this if I see any changes in my skin. I’m super glad I found this affordable option! I was looking at Elta MD (heard it piles, especially with makeup so I held back) and La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light but luckily I decided to peak at the more affordable spectrum of sunscreen. As of now, this sunscreen is a keeper. Let’s see how it stands after a week!
