Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean'

Short, broad green leaves with cream-coloured margins give Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' its compact spider plant shape. The leaves grow from a dense central rosette, so young plants stay shorter and fuller than many longer-leaved spider plant forms.

Mature plants can send out slender stems from the centre. These stems may carry small white flowers first, then young plantlets. Older stems can hang beyond the pot as the plant matures.

Compact Ocean spider plant traits

  • Short, broad leaves compared with many classic spider plants
  • Green leaf centres with cream margins
  • Dense rosette growth while young
  • Small white flowers and plantlets on mature stems
  • Thick roots that store moisture
  • Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Origin, roots and mature growth

Chlorophytum comosum belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native across parts of tropical Africa into southern Africa. The species grows as a perennial with strap-shaped leaves, fleshy roots and slender stems that can carry flowers and plantlets.

'Ocean' is a cultivated cream-edged form with a compact habit. Its thick roots help it cope with short dry phases, but they also fill a pot strongly over time.

Ocean spider plant care

  • Light: Place it where the leaves get plenty of daylight with protection from harsh midday sun. Strong sun behind glass can mark the cream edges.
  • Watering: Let the upper part of the substrate dry, then water thoroughly. The roots store moisture, but they can rot if the pot stays wet for days.
  • Substrate: Use a mix that keeps air around the roots. Perlite, fine bark, pumice or similar open material helps the pot drain without drying instantly.
  • Temperature: Keep the pot out of cold, wet conditions.
  • Humidity: Normal home humidity is usually enough. Very dry heated air can make brown tips more common.
  • Feeding: A light fertiliser dose during active growth is enough. Heavy feeding can build up salts and may reduce plantlet formation.
  • Repotting: Move up one pot size when thick roots crowd the pot or the substrate dries unusually fast.
  • Pruning: Trim dry tips and remove spent stems or fully damaged leaves with clean scissors.
  • Propagation: Root plantlets once small roots are visible, or divide a mature clump during repotting.
  • Summer outdoors: Warm sheltered shade can suit it in summer. Acclimate first and bring it indoors before nights turn cool.

Brown tips, plantlets and root checks

  • Brown tips: Dry air, irregular watering, mineral-heavy water and fertiliser salts are the usual causes. Flush the substrate if salts have built up.
  • Soft centre: Cold wet substrate, water sitting in the rosette or weak airflow are the first things to check.
  • Few plantlets: Young plants may need more maturity. Too much fertiliser can also keep growth focused on leaves.
  • Scorched pale margins: Direct sun can burn the cream edges. Move the plant into filtered light and remove only fully damaged leaves.
  • Fast-drying pot: Thick roots may have filled the container, leaving little room for substrate to hold water.

Pets and young plantlets

Chlorophytum comosum is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Ingested leaves may still cause mild stomach upset, and repeated nibbling can damage young plantlets.

Species name

The accepted species name is Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques. Chlorophytum comes from Greek roots meaning green or yellow-green plant, and comosum means furnished with a tuft. 'Ocean' is the cultivar name for this compact cream-edged form.

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' starts as a compact cream-edged rosette and can mature into a spider plant with arching plantlet stems.

Great dressy sneaker to wear with business casual or jeans
Size: 11, Color: British Tan/Ivry
I got these for my husband to wear with jeans or business casual dress pants. They look sharp and professional and dress up jeans if you're going out. He says they fit comfortably and he can walk on them all day without his feet hurting. They are beautiful genuine leather so they don't get stinky. I got my husband's normal size and they fit to size.
