About this cultivar:

Ageratina altissima 'Chocolate' is a mid-height perennial that has fluffly white flowers versus mature dark foliage, perfect for adding contrast to the garden. The dark leaves show their best colour in full sun, but adequate moisture is needed to keep the leaves from scorching. In fact, ‘Chocolate’ thrives in moist soil and partial shade!

Introduced by Mt. Cuba Center of the USA in 1994 this cultivar was selected by Dr. Richard Lighty and descended from a plant found in the early 1970s by Hal Bruce. ‘Chocolate’ was found to have the darkest foliage of many seedlings grown over a ten year period. About this genus:

Ageratina is a genus of more than 330 perennials and rounded shrubs commonly called snake root. The genus name Ageratina means "like Ageratum" which in turn comes from from the Greek agēraton ‘that which does not age’. It is one of the many members of the daisy family, Asteraceae.

These plants grow mainly in the warmer and cooler areas of the Americas. Native Americans reportedly used a decoction of the roots as a remedy for snakebite, hence the common name. Settlers who drank milk from cows that fed on this plant often developed the disease called milk sickness! Don’t let your cows eat it then!

The flowers consist of multiple fluffy, red or pinkish-white florets in clusters. They have multiple, much-branched woody stems. The leaves are triangular, serrated, and opposite with a musky scent (which some people don’t like!).

Ageratina used to belong to the genus Eupatorium, but it has been reclassified recently by the powers that be (DNA testing). Thus when we are talking about Ageratina in the garden we might as well be talking about Eupatorium. What does that mean? Good in wet, shady areas, but will tolerate full sun and some dryness. Tough! Deciduous but often provides nice winter structure. For more chat, lookup Eupatorium!

Great with other late flowering perennials such as Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Helenium, Helianthus, Ornamental grasses, Veronicastrum, Roses, Larger Persicaria

    My dog's favorite toy, but
    Size: 15 Inch
My dog loves his "lizzie" but the quality has gone down. The leather is thinner and easily torn, exposing the squeaker which becomes a swallowing hazard. Of course, no squeaker and half the fun is gone. For $10, I won't be buying any more of these. Sorry about that my furry friend.

Almost as good a chewing on my belt.
    Size: 25 Inch
My corgi has always loved chasing her leash or a belt so I thought the snake would be a good fit for her. It quickly became her favorite. The squeakers lasted for maybe a month? Once there was a hole then we took them all out so she wouldn't choke. The snake without the squeakers is still a favorite. She's been chewing the tail end consistently and likes to lick it for some reason. I recommend this as a good tug toy. I like that it was made of leather.

    DISAPPOINTED
Size: 25 Inch, Size: 25 Inch
I've bought this 9 times since it's my Maltipoos' favorite toy! Unfortunately the one that just came in is not up to par as those previously bought. The leather was cut sloppily & the sewing sometimes ran off the leather completely or so close to edges could easily be chewed open. I can't send back because bought as a treat before leaving for trip & the fact he's already seen it ! I used sewing machine to sew areas that were close to edges - had to take out stitches to remove top squeaker to be able to sew around that area on both sides. Don't know how long this one will last even though I used quilting thread which is a bit stronger than regular thread. Hope this was just a bad one & if so, wish company's quality control would have caught this & rejected it.

    Not for aggressive chewers
    Size: 36 Inch
My GSD ate half of it within 20min before I caught her. I don’t think it was meant for aggressive chewers so I can’t fault the product for that. My dogs did have a few hours of fun with it playing tug and it held up well.
