Philodendron 'Sucre's Slim' – Rare Collector’s Creeper with Spear-Like Leaves

Sucre's Slim' Philodendron – Blade Structure, Botanical Rarity and Clumping Growth

Philodendron 'Sucre's Slim' is an extremely rare, virtually absent-from-collections philodendron, first circulated in 1989 by Dimitri Sucre in Rio de Janeiro. Whether this plant is a hybrid, a cultivar, or an undescribed species remains unknown – though some botanists lean toward it being a natural, undescribed species within the creeping Philodendron group.

The standout feature of this plant is its strikingly narrow, lanceolate leaves. Each spear-shaped blade grows only 20 – 25 cm long, with a width of just 2 – 3 cm at the widest point. These are supported by elongated petioles that often stretch to twice the blade length, featuring striated textures on the upper (adaxial) side near the base. It grows low and dense, forming a clumping structure rather than sprawling like typical creepers. Despite its strong presence, it’s considered one of the smallest known philodendrons in terms of leaf mass and spread.

Key physical traits and structure

  • Leaf shape: Spear-like, long and narrow, tapering at both ends
  • Size: Leaf blades reach 20 – 25 cm in length, petioles up to 50 cm
  • Texture: Smooth matte surface; petiole striated near base
  • Growth pattern: Clumping, basal rosettes – not a crawler or climber
  • Overall habit: Extremely compact, upright and slow-spreading

Background and growth origin

This plant was introduced to cultivation by Dimitri Sucre in Brazil, with very limited distribution since 1989. It remains unclassified in botanical literature – not yet confirmed as a species, hybrid, or cultivar. It shows characteristics of a true creeping philodendron but does not behave like a typical runner; instead, it grows in tight clumps. Its unique combination of petite size, long petioles, and sharply narrowed foliage has made it a standout among collectors looking for compact and highly structured plants.

Toxic to pets and humans if ingested, like most Philodendron species.

Philodendron 'Sucre's Slim' care essentials

  • Light: Bright, indirect light maintains healthy growth and compact form
  • Watering: Allow top 2 – 3 cm of soil to dry between waterings
  • Humidity: Prefers 60 – 80%; sustained humidity supports tighter leaf spacing
  • Temperature: Ideal between 18 – 28 °C – avoid chills
  • Soil: Loose aroid mix with bark, perlite, coir, and compost
  • Repotting: Rarely needed – every 2+ years, or when rootbound
  • Fertilising: Feed once per month during active growth with mild liquid fertiliser
  • Propagation: Division of clumps or rooted node cuttings
  • Hydroponics: Tolerates semi-hydro if humidity and warmth are stable
  • Pruning: Not typically required – remove old leaves occasionally

Problems and practical fixes

  • Leaf browning: Usually linked to low humidity or mineral buildup
  • Slow growth: Normal for this variety; check light levels and substrate quality
  • Root rot: Always use breathable substrate and pots with good drainage
  • Pests (mealybugs, thrips): Monitor leaf bases and treat with neem or insecticidal soap
  • Leaf curl: Can indicate inconsistent watering or root compaction

Extra notes on growth and placement

'Sucre's Slim' is best grown in a wide, shallow pot to encourage clump development. Its vertical petioles create an upright profile despite its creeping relatives. Use soft filtered light and avoid deep shade to maintain shape and color. It's a slow grower – expect patience to be part of the journey. Keeping a stable environment helps it settle and push new leaves regularly.

Etymology and name origin

Philodendron is derived from Greek – "philo" meaning love, and "dendron" meaning tree – a reference to the climbing habit of most species, though this one stays compact. The cultivar name refers to Dimitri Sucre, who first introduced this form, and its slim, refined leaf shape. The Latin root of Philodendron also includes the Indo-European root deru- meaning wood or firm, tying it to forest origins.

Weird garbage
Size: 12 Long, Color: Iced Blue Light Wash
Very strange fit, saw the reviews about weird fit but so many others said great fit so that's on me. Got them for under 10 bucks so hard to complain..... however..... Got 12 Long. They are at least a size too big but I generally do that to accommodate shrinking especially length. On what planet these would be considered long I dunno. I'm only 5'8". If you pull them up to where crotch is not sagging, barely to my ankles. Almost long enough if you want the crotch to droop several inches. Fit loose but comfortable in butt and thighs. The waist however is about 4 inches too big and gaps horribly. Almost like waist is actually wider than hips. Strange. Not skinny cut except for right at ankle. The left leg inseam is cut horribly crooked and runs down almost front of leg so altering them is not worth the trouble. They are fairly thick and do stretch, like the denim wash very much. So disappointed. So the great deal I thought I was getting was garbage . Should have know for that price they were unloading their trash

Perfect fit for 5'10
Size: 10 Long, Color: White
White jeans size 10 long fit perfectly. Im 5'10 130 pounds Always have trouble with length and overall fit. These were on sale for less than 11$! Material has some stretch, not too much. I'm going to hang to dry don't want any shrinkage. Fit is less tight than an earlier version of these jeans.

Perfect buy!
Fit Type: Regular, Size: Large, Color: White
This white denim jacket came today, and finally I bought the perfect jacket! It's actual denim, heavy but not too bulky. It fits perfectly, I bought a large, it's white not off white, and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I had to wait a week or two but it is definitely worth the wait! Beautiful jacket, well made and at a decent price! Thanks Amazon Essentials!

Love denim and tired of cropped jackets?
Fit Type: Oversized, Size: Large, Color: Medium Blue Vintage
I like this a lot, it was what I was looking for as far as I'm so over everything you buy these days is cropped. Cropped styles are great, but are kind of getting old for some things in my opinion. The jacket is big as far as how it fits. I am 5'8" about 180 and I wish I would have got a medium, I got a large. The large is big and roomy enough that I could even wear ear a thick hoodie under it if I wanted to. However, the length is good as what I was looking for. The upper arms are large. However, this is a great quality denim jacket. Nice and thick, sturdy material (which I wanted). It's also at a great, competitive low price even if it's not on sale. Don't believe me, go ahead and search jean jackets. You'll see a ton, but I looked too and the quality did not look as good as this and plus the other jackets were a lot more for a lot less. If you're looking for a longer jean jacket, I highly recommend this. I'd say just think seriously about sizing down 1... even maybe 2 sizes. I would have gotten an XL before I read the other reviews. They recommended to size down, and after getting my jacket I could have sized down to a medium. I'm still happy with it and this is a jacket that is stitched well and will last a very long time. As always though, that's just my 2 cents. :)

Nice quality, shape not for me
Fit Type: Oversized, Size: Medium, Color: Medium Blue Vintage
This was just too boxy for my body. Material was nice, quality jean material. Color was true to image. It was a little stiff but as you would expect with nice, new and unwashed denim.
