You've got your Watters Potting Soil, a fine, all-purpose mix, and then there's cactus mix. Now, why would you choose the cactus mix over the Watters blend? It boils down to one simple thing: drainage.
Cactus mix is designed for plants that thrive in arid conditions. Think succulents, cacti, and even some herbs like rosemary and lavender. These plants are adapted to dry, sandy soils and hate sitting in water. If you use a standard potting soil, like Watters Potting Soil, which retains moisture beautifully for most plants, you're setting yourself up for root rot.
Cactus mix is formulated with a higher percentage of sand, perlite, or pumice. This creates a very porous environment, allowing water to drain quickly and air to circulate freely around the roots. It mimics the natural conditions these plants are used to, preventing those soggy, waterlogged roots.
So, Cactus Mix is the way to go if you're working with cacti, succulents, or any plant that prefers dry feet. It's not about being better than the other; it's about choosing the right soil for the right plant. You wouldn't wear hiking boots to a swimming pool, would you? Same principle applies here.
