Origins, Migration, and History of Domestication
Della Sorghum traces its lineage to the ancient domestication of Sorghum bicolor in northeastern Africa, particularly in regions of present-day Sudan and Ethiopia, where sorghum emerged over 5,000 years ago as a drought-resilient staple grain. As pastoral and agrarian communities migrated across the African continent, sorghum diversified into numerous landraces adapted to local climates and cultural uses. Through trans-Saharan trade routes and later the forced migrations of the transatlantic slave trade, sorghum seeds traveled to the Americas, where African-descended farmers preserved and adapted them under new environmental conditions. Sorghum is commonly grown throughout Africa as a grain as well as for syrup.

Della Sorghum is an heirloom sweet sorghum variety with roots in the American South, where sorghum cane was grown extensively in the 19th and early 20th centuries for syrup-making. Sweet sorghum varieties like Della were cultivated as a regional staple before the widespread availability of refined sugar, with families producing rich, dark syrups from the pressed stalks. Passed down through generations, Della retains its heritage as a dependable syrup cane, prized for both its flavor and resilience in hot climates. With a stalk height rising up to 11 ft.

Developed by Bob Harrison of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, it was released in December 1991. 'Della' matures about one week earlier than 'Dale' and about 6 days later than 'Sugar Drip'. Della is a backcross of 'Dale' — one of the modern sorghum-syrup-makers gold-standard varieties for excellent syrup quality — to an earlier maturing line. It is resistant to anthracnose and maize dwarf mosaic and is moderately susceptible to bacterial stripe. Della Sorghum was the first seed crop produced by Ujamaa Seeds, in cooperation with our friends at Serenity Farm in Benedict, Maryland, so it is a sentimental favorite! It's also a darn-good dual-use sorghum! These seeds were grown on the Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA) seed farming training site in Maryland.

Appearance and Characteristics
Della Sorghum is a warm-season annual grain that typically grows 5–8 feet tall, with sturdy, upright stalks and broad, corn-like leaves. Its seed heads (panicles) are dense and slightly open, often displaying hues of reddish-brown to deep amber as they mature. The grains themselves are small, round, and firm, with a glossy finish. This variety is valued for its adaptability to heat and drought, as well as its ability to perform in marginal soils where other grains struggle. Like many heirloom sorghums, Della maintains genetic diversity, contributing to resilience against pests and environmental stress.

Culinary Uses
Della Sorghum is a versatile grain with deep cultural roots. The harvested grain can be milled into gluten-free flour for baking breads, flatbreads, and porridges, or cooked whole as a hearty grain similar to rice or barley. It can also be popped like popcorn for a nutritious snack. In some traditions, sorghum is used to produce syrups or fermented beverages. Its mild, slightly nutty flavor makes it adaptable across both savory and sweet dishes, aligning with traditional African, Southern U.S., and global grain-based cuisines.

Growing Tips and Sow Depth
Sorghum thrives in full sun and warm soil, making it ideal for USDA Zones 7–11, including regions like the Mid-Atlantic. Direct sow seeds after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 60°F (16°C). Plant seeds at a depth of ½ to 1 inch, spacing them 6–12 inches apart in rows spaced 18–36 inches apart. Della Sorghum is highly drought-tolerant once established but benefits from consistent moisture during early growth. It performs well in well-drained soils and does not require heavy fertilization, making it suitable for low-input and regenerative systems—an important trait for seed sovereignty and agroecological farming models.  'Della' is more prone to lodging (dipping over) compared to 'Dale' and is more variable in plant height. It is similar to 'Dale' in syrup quality. The biggest advantage of 'Della' is that it matures one week earlier than 'Dale' and thus would let you start cooking a little earlier in the fall.

Harvesting Guidance
Sorghum is typically ready for harvest 90–120 days after planting, when seed heads have fully matured and turned dry and firm, and grains are hard to the touch. Harvest by cutting the seed heads and allowing them to dry further in a well-ventilated area before threshing. Proper drying is essential to prevent mold and ensure long-term storage viability. Once threshed and cleaned, grains can be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. For seed saving, select the healthiest, most vigorous plants to maintain the integrity and resilience of the Della Sorghum lineage.

Harvesting Guidance

For syrup production, the stalks are harvested when seed heads mature and stalks reach peak sweetness, typically about 100–120 days after planting. The seed heads are usually removed before pressing the cane. Stalks are stripped of leaves, cut, and immediately processed to preserve sugar content. For grain use, allow seed heads to fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting. The grains can then be threshed and cleaned for storage. Syrup should be stored in sealed containers, while grain must be kept in a cool, dry place to maintain viability for food or seed-saving.

3D Printed (Not Mentioned) and Base is Way Too Loose
Size: Small Storage Area, Size: Small Storage Area
I bought this to clean up my desk setup for my SteelSeries Nova Pro Wireless, and while it looks decent from a distance, there are two major issues that weren't clear from the product page. First, this is a 3D-printed product. Nowhere in the Amazon description or photos does it state that this is 3D printed. You can clearly see the layer lines and "stair-stepping" on the curves. While I don't mind 3D printing in general, for this price point, I expected a standard injection-molded plastic finish. The product page feels a bit misleading by omitting this detail. Second, the fit is very poor. The "integrated dock" for the GameDAC station doesn't actually lock into place. There is no snap or friction fit; it sits so loosely that you can slide the DAC out of the front or back with the single push of a finger. This makes it feel unstable, especially when you are trying to use the volume dial or swap out batteries. Bottom Line: It’s a nice idea and fits the aesthetic of the headset, but the execution feels like a prototype rather than a finished consumer product. If you're looking for a secure "lock-in" feel for your expensive base station, this isn't it.

High quality stand
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver, Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver
The mStand 360 is an amazing stand. I love how it is built from a single piece of aluminum and looks amazing on my desk. It fits my Macbook Pro 15" extremely well and raises it up to the height of my monitor easily. Not only does it help me improve my posture, but it also neatens up my desk significantly. I can easily fit an external keyboard under my Macbook when I am not using it, clearing up space. The hole in the back is also useful for bunching cables together that go directly into my Macbook, keeping my cables off the floor when I take my Macbook to go somewhere. The stand feels very stable, with no chance of my Macbook falling off. The aluminum C shape does have a slight bend on it if you put extra weight on it, but all in all, it feels very sturdy. The rubber padding on the stand also keeps the stand from scraping or damaging any part of my laptop and I feel very comfortable trusting the stand with my laptop. I would not recommend typing on a laptop keyboard while it is on the stand, but it works great with external keyboards. The swivel feature met my expectations, allowing the laptop to be easily turned. Thankfully, it was not too easy to turn and my laptop does not turn itself when in the stand. It is a nice feature to have, especially because I paid only 5$ extra for it (the price for the swivel stand seems to have increased since then). I am very happy with my purchase, even though it did seem a little expensive. I am wholly satisfied that I spent the extra 20$ to get a great laptop stand that will probably last for years.

This stand is just perfect!
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Space Gray
I first started looking at stands when I learned that staring at a laptop for hours can cause back injuries. So, I got the idea to use a stand, at home. This stand allows me to have a keyboard and mouse and use my laptop as a glorified desktop with a smaller monitor. I was astonished at the quality of this stand. It is better built than it needs to be, but I am not complaining at all about this. Let's face it, we spend a lot of money on our laptops, and you want to have a great platform to sit your laptop on. I love the ability to swivel the stand. My desk is very close to a window that lets in a lot of the sun at certain times of days. This would result in a glare if not for the ability to spin my computer ever so slightly in either direction to combat this problem. Also, it is a great cable manager with the hole on the back of the stand that makes everything look cleaner and more organized. The color matches my MacBook perfectly and looks like it is an Apple product. Summary: Great product. High quality. Looks great. Swizel is impressive and useful.

Perfect stand for your Apple products
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver
I loved the look and design of this stand so much that I bought two of them, one for my work office and one for my home office. I have a 13" Macbook Pro and the screen sits at the perfect height for me. I do not feel like I am straining my neck looking down at my computer screen anymore. At both my work and home offices I have Apple display monitors, so now my laptop screen is inline with my monitors, AND matches their bases, which is very nice. The keyboard is at a nice angle and isn't too high off the desk if you need to use the trackpad or keyboard. However, I recommend using a secondary keyboard and mouse. The keyboard sits about 4" off the desk so there is room to store your secondary keyboard and mouse underneath the stand. But because it is 4" off the desk, it makes it uncomfortable to type on the laptop or use the trackpad for an extended period of time. The cord keeper hole in the back of the stand is a nice touch, however if your cords are too tight, it will rotate your stand. The swivel is a nice touch, but it is somewhat sensitive. So far no accidental bumps have irritated me, which was one of my concerns before I purchased. All-in-all I would recommend this product to anyone who uses their laptop with a secondary display, regardless of if you use Apple products or not. It is a well made stand and looks good, and seems like it will accommodate most laptops (within the manufacturers guidelines).

A Solution to Lapbook Problems
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver
This is the best product I have encountered in all my days of using a laptop. I use it with a wireless keyboard, and so the screen is up in my face where I can see it well, and the keyboard in down below where I can type easily without tiring my wrists. I am delighted with it all. The stand swivels, an advantage I was not expecting to care about, and find that I do. The swivel allows me to adjust to the incoming light for better vision. That might not make sense to users of lamps, but I have a skylight and so am accommodating to the sun all day long. The swivel changes everything. Another plus is how sturdy the stand is. I have no fears of it turning over or dumping the laptop into my lap. It is clearly there to stay, and yet if I need to move it, that is easily accomplished. I tuck the entire thing behind closed doors most of the time when it is not in use, and that leaves my work space neat and tidy. There is one final advantage. I am a coffee drinker, and I have always been worried about knocking my cup over into my computer. With the stand, my computer sits above the desk top where I put my coffee, and the keyboard is on s shell below and out of the way. I still prefer to drink rather than knock over my coffee, but, hey, why not have a measure of safety also. I give this product a 10 star review if there is such a thing. It has been a real game changer for me, and now I am not regretting not purchasing a desktop machine. My laptop is absolutely perfect with this stand, and has the advantage that it goes with me when I travel. Bettie Banks
