DESCRIPTION: Ionantha Rubra is a species of plant in the genus Tillandsia. Ionantha Rubra differentiates itself from Ionantha Guatemala with its more succulent leaves and thicker base. Ionantha Rubra also tend to turn a deeper red when in bloom. This species is native to Central America and Mexico. Tillandsia ionantha was described by Jules Emile Planchon and published in Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe between 1854 - 1855. In nature, Tillandsia ionantha has been found growing in both xeric and mesic tropical habitats. This makes the species very beginner friendly as it tolerates a wide range of light and watering routines.
NOTE: This plant naturally sheds its lower leaves and in time forms a little "stem" so if you see some loose leaves at the very base of the plant, do not worry, it is natural so just leave them alone.
