Thirty-five years after its original publication, Hopeful Monsters reemerges as one of the “grand intellectual dramas” of the 20th century (—The New York Times).

A sweeping, comprehensive epic, Hopeful Monsters tells the story of the love affair between Max, an English student studying physics and biology, and Eleanor, a German Jew and political radical. Together, Max and Eleanor participate in the great political and intellectual movements which shape the twentieth-century, taking them from Cambridge and Berlin to the Spanish Civil War, Russia, the Sahara, and finally to Los Alamos to witness the first nuclear test.

Originally published as the culminating volume of a series of five works of fiction entitled “Catastrophe Practice” that The Chicago Tribune called “one of the most important extended literary projects of [the 20th] century,” Hopeful Monsters is the first reissue in a new Dalkey Archive initiative to bring Mosley’s epistolary genius back into circulation for modern readers.

"The two things that are extremely impressive about this book are, first, its intellectual energy and rigour and, secondly, Mosley's gift, rivalling Koestler's or Bertrand Russell's, for summarising extremely difficult ideas in an easily intelligible manner." Spectator

"This is a major novel. I read it barely stopping to eat and sleep. It is the sort of book that one reads again and again, making new discoveries at each reading." Hampstead & Highgate Express

"Fascinating. . . . The novel achieves grand intellectual drama." —Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, New York Times

"The most ambitious English novel written in the past 50 years ... an amazing achievement." Washington Post Book World

"The culminating volume of a series of five fictions called 'Catastrophe Practice' that may be one of the most important extended literary projects of this century . . . Mosley has been feeling his way toward what is ultimately a hopeful vision of the human prospect after having comprehended—in virtually every sense of the term— the turbulence and torments resulting from this century's fierce intellectual and ideological conflicts." —Chicago Tribune

"A brilliant literary performance." —Forward

"What makes Hopeful Monsters a successful book is not so much its big ideas but the passionate intelligence through which they're refracted." —San Francisco Chronicle

"A rich panorama of 20th-century politics and ideas and an affecting love story, the novel combines the epic sweep and narrative drive of popular fiction and the intellectual authority of the best of Milan Kundera or Saul Bellow." —Newsday

"Intellectual and emotional history become delicately and provocatively joined in an agile narrative of the wages of hope in a monstrous century. . . . One of the grandest novels of ideas of our time." —Voice Literary Supplement

"Hopeful Monsters's success lies in Mosley's skill at personalizing sweeping historical events and complex theories ... an extraordinary novel." Boston Globe

"There is, as always in Nicholas Mosley's writing, the pleasure of eloquent ideas eagerly and warmly shared." —Washington Times

PASSED MY INSPECTION! THIS PRODUCT WORKS LIKE A MIRACLE DONT HESITATE TO BUY IT!
Inspection on my car due the end of January! My check engine light was coming on so I checked with a code reader & found it was a P0420. Read about the Catalytic Converter System possibly being in need of replacement or perhaps clogged. I am a woman, and know next to ZERO about cars, but I can read. Did investigate and found that the replacement of a Catalytic Converter system is mad expensive- also found this Moly Cleaner to add to gas tank. I'm not going to lie; I was nervous as I have a Kia Rio 2014 that has a very small gas tank and gets great gas mileage. In reading the consensus seemed to be to add to 1/4 tank of gas and drive fast for good periods of time to blow out the clog (if it was a clog). Did I mention I live in NYC and driving for long periods of time at high speeds can be a problem because of terrible traffic. Anyhow, this Saturday I poured the can into my 1/2 filled tank and hit a parkway near my home early morning. I did drive for 45 miles sometimes at 80mph then 60mph but tried to do it for a good few minutes at a time without getting pulled over. Checked my reader again, and it was not quite ready but the engine light did stay off. Next day, drove to work, stuck in traffic somewhat & never made it over 20mph & checked my reader again- all good to go for inspection. Went last night- my car PASSED and got that sticker in my window- so I am good for another year. The BEST money I have spent all year. Thank you for carrying this product! Saved me thousands! DONT HESITATE TO USE THIS. The hardest part for me was removing the cap on the can!

Great stuff
Seemed to work as well as or better than some more expensive catalytic converter cleaners. I put it in while at 1/3 tank and my Check Engine light went out almost immediately once I started driving. My Tundra has almost 230,000 miles and still runs great but was getting a little harder to start after I switched from full synthetic oil to conventional. I’ll never do that again and immediately switched back but the damage was done. Check engine light came on and I had to crank longer to get it started. Adding this Liquid Moly fixed both issues temporarily. I have to wonder if this was used regularly, say every 3 months, if it would clean the catalytic converter more permanently?

Nice Filter Wrench for my Volvo V70XC!
Size: 86mm x 16
I was needing a filter wrench for my 2001 Volvo V70XC and couldn't find anything that fit from the local auto parts stores. Not knowing what to expect, I took a chance on this one since most of the reviews were 5 star and the price was exceptional. When I received it, I was quite pleased with the construction and finish. I have a brand new oil filter housing for my Volvo (since the one currently on my car is chewed up from the former owner using slip-jaw pliers or something on it) and the fit is perfect! I have worked as a mechanic my whole life (aircraft & automotive), and spent a couple of years as a technician at an automotive dealership and I can say that the tool looks like it is designed for heavy-duty use. The stamped steel housing is thicker than those found in local auto parts stores and the drive adapter has a thick arc welded bead along the inside of the tool. So, it appears to be made to hold up to some fairly heavy torque. Although the product description states that it is 1/2", the drive adapter is actually made for direct attachment to a 3/8" drive. Perhaps this error stems from the fact that they offer a much larger wrench (118-131mm) and this is a more accurate description of their other offerings. The 3/8" drive adapter works perfectly and a 21mm socket fits nicely on the external hex. Fits with SAE sizes are a mixed bag, though. I was able to attach a 13/16" 12-pt. box-end wrench, but not the opposing open-end. A similarly sized 13/16" 6-pt. socket was extremely tight, so I wouldn't recommend this size and would just go with the 21mm if you had to use the external hex. Otherwise, just use the 3/8" drive adapter for easiest use of this tool. The adapter also incorporates ball detents on all four sides of the internal 3/8" drive, so your ratchet or extension won't easily fall off while in use. Since this tool is made for oil filter removal & installation, I'm sure that it will deliver as promised. I'll post an update after my next oil change and I get a chance to use it and install the new filter housing I have.
