Description

aglaonema - silver bay Aglaonema 'Silver Bay'Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' Broad silver grey leaf centres and deep green margins make Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' one of the fuller looking Chinese evergreens. Mature plants form a rounded clump with wide leaves, strong side growth and enough weight to suit a stable pot. As it matures, the crown needs space to spread and a container that will not tip as the foliage gains size. It is a better fit for a plant stand, low table or floor pot than a narrow shelf.

Aglaonema 'Silver Bay'

Broad silver-grey leaf centres and deep green margins make Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' one of the fuller-looking Chinese evergreens. Mature plants form a rounded clump with wide leaves, strong side growth and enough weight to suit a stable pot.

As it matures, the crown needs space to spread and a container that will not tip as the foliage gains size. It is a better fit for a plant stand, low table or floor pot than a narrow shelf.

Broad-crown traits

  • Growth habit: Broad clumping Aglaonema with side growth from the base.
  • Leaf size: Large lance-shaped leaves that become wider on mature plants.
  • Colour pattern: Silver-grey centres with green margins and mixed green-grey edge markings.
  • Mature shape: Full rounded crown suited to floor pots, plant stands and wider display spaces.

Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' mature form

Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' was released through the University of Florida foliage plant breeding programme in 1992. It was selected for broad silver-green foliage, strong branching from the base and a full indoor habit.

The genus Aglaonema is native from north-eastern India to Papua New Guinea and belongs to Araceae. Older stems of this cultivar can become cane-like, while new side shoots keep the plant dense from below.

Care needs for a larger crown

  • Light: Grow in bright indirect to medium light. Shield broad leaves from direct midday sun.
  • Watering: Water when the upper substrate has dried. Check deeper in larger pots because the centre can stay moist longer.
  • Substrate: Use a loose indoor aroid mix with bark, perlite or pumice for drainage and root oxygen.
  • Pot choice: Use a stable pot with drainage holes as the crown gains width and weight.
  • Temperature: Keep above 18 °C. Warm roots help new leaves reach normal size instead of emerging smaller or stalling.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is usually tolerated; steady moderate humidity reduces stuck or torn broad new leaves.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly but regularly during active growth, especially on established plants with several crowns.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots crowd the container or the plant dries too quickly after watering.
  • Pruning: Remove older lower leaves and shorten bare canes above nodes so new shoots can form lower on the stem.
  • Propagation: Divide rooted side shoots or root older stem cuttings with visible nodes in warm conditions.

Crown and leaf responses

  • Yellow lower leaves: Check drainage and deeper pot moisture, especially when rooms are cool.
  • Brown scorched patches: Move the plant away from direct sun, hot glass or intense grow lights.
  • Long bare stems: Cut older canes above nodes and root healthy sections if the plant has lost lower leaves.
  • Leaf spotting: Improve airflow around dense crowns and keep water from collecting in leaf bases.

Handling and household safety

Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Position it where pets and small children cannot eat the leaves or stems. If sap contacts the skin during pruning, wash the area with water.

Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' works best where its broad silver-green crown has enough space to widen instead of being squeezed between smaller plants.

loud but in a good way
Size: 4.5"
Love these crazy loud squeeky balls. I bought two a bit too big but the dogs still love them. Yes, they will drive you insane but the dogs love them so much it's worth it watching the pups enjoy the balls. They are strong and safe as long as they aren't too small for your dogs mouth.

Great for aggressive chewers - Great for clean teeth
I never thought these would stand up to my 60lb pittie puppy's chewing. But they are far and away her favorite toy and are holding up beautifully. One squeaker insert bit the dust -- which is not bad since it gives us one silent one. But otherwise they are holding up superbly to her powerful jaws. We have tried a lot of toys. So far, all the "for aggressive chewers" toys have been torn apart within days if we are lucky -- usually it's minutes. But these balls show little-to-no sign of wear. The squeakers are very loud which she loves can get a bit tiresome. So, as I mentioned, having one silent one is a great option. And she really likes the texture. She loves them so much, we bought a second set and will probably buy a third to have in reserve. (We are realistic and don't expect them to last forever.) All I have to say is "where's spiky ball" and she instantly stops what she is doing and goes on the hunt. A great buy!! (NOTE: It's been almost three months and one is just beginning to show some damage. Given that she plays with them non-stop, they've showed amazing durability. And everyone comments on how clean and beautiful her teeth are. I don't brush them or give her dental treats. So it has to be these balls!!)

Good sturdy ball for aggressive chewer
Size: 4.5"
Nice heavy duty ball that my 7 yr old pitbull can chew on and not destroy it in 2 minutes. Wish that could get 3 for the cost but whatever. Nice bright colors . Good size that he won't choke on it .

Great ball but poor squeaked design
Size: 4.5"
My Rottie loves these balls. The ball lasts a long time even though he plays hard and chews them. My biggest complaint is the squeaker disconnects easily from inside the ball, the glue does not hold! We have bought many of these balls because eventually the area where the squeaker is attached comes away from the ball leaving an open whole that causes the ball to eventually developed a long crack at which point it no longer is able to be thrown nor is is fun for him any longer.
