Ficus elastica 'Abidjan'

Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' is a dark-leaved rubber plant with broad, glossy blades that open from slender red buds and mature into deep green to near-burgundy foliage. The leaves are thick, broadly oval and smooth, with bronze-toned undersides and dark red midribs that give the plant a rich, shadowed look.

It grows as a self-supporting evergreen indoor tree or shrub, developing woody upright stems that can be left to gain height or pruned to encourage branching. Young plants usually show a clean vertical outline, while older container-grown plants become heavier at the top as stems thicken and fresh leaves continue forming from the shoot tips.

Dark rubber plant leaves with red-toned new growth

  • Leaf colour: Glossy dark green leaves often show burgundy tones, especially on newer growth and undersides.
  • New shoots: Slender red leaf sheaths protect each developing leaf before it unfurls.
  • Stem habit: Woody stems rise from the pot and can branch after pruning.
  • Leaf care: The large leaves collect dust easily, so gentle wiping keeps the surface clear.
  • Plant family: Ficus elastica belongs to Moraceae, the fig family.

How Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' develops indoors

Ficus elastica is a wet-tropical tree species native from Nepal to western Yunnan and western Malesia. In its natural range, it can grow into a large tree and produce aerial and supporting roots as it matures. Indoors, Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' stays much smaller, but the same tree-forming habit is visible in its thickening stems, large leaves and steady production of new growth from the upper nodes.

The glossy leaves stay attached for a long time on woody stems, and sudden changes in light, temperature or root moisture can trigger leaf drop before the plant visibly wilts. In a bright indoor spot, the stems firm up and new leaves usually expand more evenly during active growth.

Light, watering and pruning for Ficus elastica 'Abidjan'

  • Light: Give bright filtered light or gentle morning sun. Strong midday sun can scorch the dark leaf surface.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the potting mix has dried. The thick leaves tolerate short dry phases better than cold, wet roots.
  • Substrate: Use an airy houseplant mix with mineral drainage material, so the root zone dries evenly after watering.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm and away from cold draughts. A range around 18–27 °C suits indoor growth well.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is usually acceptable, while very dry air can make new leaves slower to unfurl.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Pause or reduce fertiliser when light and growth slow down in winter.
  • Pruning: Cut above a node to manage height or encourage side shoots, and protect surfaces from dripping white latex.
  • Potting: Repot when the root ball is firm and water runs through too quickly, using a pot only slightly larger.

Leaf drop, dull leaves and stem issues

  • Lower leaf drop: Check for recent moves, cold draughts, low light or repeated overwatering before changing several care factors at once.
  • Yellowing leaves: Inspect the root zone. Soggy substrate, a blocked cachepot or a pot sitting in water can cause root stress.
  • Brown patches: Look at sun exposure and leaf temperature. Dark glossy leaves can mark if placed against hot glass or harsh direct sun.
  • Slow new leaves: Check warmth, light and root space. Growth naturally slows during darker months.
  • Pests: Scale, mealybugs and spider mites can hide along midribs and stems; clean leaves and inspect new growth regularly.

Handling Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' safely

Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' produces a white latex when leaves or stems are cut or damaged. This sap can irritate skin and eyes, and the plant should be kept away from pets and small children that may chew leaves or stems. Wear gloves when pruning, wash off any sap promptly and keep cuttings away from curious animals.

Botanical background behind the rubber plant name

Ficus elastica Roxb. ex Hornem. is the accepted botanical name for the species. The genus name Ficus comes from the Latin name for the edible fig, while the specific epithet elastica refers to the latex historically linked with rubber.

Red shoot sheaths open into broad burgundy-green leaves on upright stems that thicken with age.

Super Cute, Fun, & Effective
Color: Lightgreen
This set of water flosser and electric toothbrush are just adorable! The shapes of them fit in the hands really comfortably, but also add to the cuteness as the shapes of the animals! Yes, this is meant for kids - so the toothbrush heads are small (for little kids), and the water flosser doesn't spray terribly hard. BUT they're still very effective. I especially like the water flosser. It can be taken into the bathtub/shower while bathing, so the spray doesn't end up going places we don't want water to go. It has a small tank of water, and I recommend using room temp water (rather than cold) so that it's comfortable on the gums and teeth. Also to note, the flosser doesn't work when it's sideways or upside-down - it needs to be held upright. This set is so cute, easy to use, easy to re-charge, and very comfortable. It's also very good quality - a great purchase. I love it!

4 year old approved!
Color: Lightgreen, Color: Lightgreen
Love that this is a complete set, down to the wall block for the charger! My daughter is 4 and absolutely loves this set. I personally feel like the toothbrush head is a tad small, but it does do the job well. Its a soft brush head, with plenty of replacement heads. The toothbrush and the flosser both arrived fully charged, and so far we havent had to recharge it, but we're only a few days in. So, it seems to have a pretty good battery life so far. (I will update my review if anything changes on that aspect) The toothbrush and flosser both stand upright independently on the counter, without tipping over. The water flosser is hard fir my daughter to do by herself. She sprays water everywhere, as theres several buttons on it and she cant seem to remember in time which button turns it off. I help her with flossing and its been going fine. Whether youre on high or low the water pressure is not too hard for a kids mouth. In fact, I think the low setting does nothing but rinse the mouth and basically teach the habit of flossing. We use the high setting and it does and OK job. I am a little old school though, and feel like nothing will top a good ole dental floss flossing, but water flossing is a safer route to avoid cutting gums or getting floss stuck between close teeth. The sound level is minimal, a fraction of the sound level my adult water flosser makes. It doesnt shake/vibrate too badly in the hand and theyre bith comfortable to hold, and size appropriate for my (4yrs) daughters hands. It comes in a really nice box, packaged perfectly, making this a great gift for your little ones. The colors and theme makes brushing teeth exciting and fun again for your littles :)

Great for kids
Color: Lightgreen
The HUACOCARE Kids Water Flosser and Electric Toothbrush Combo is an absolute game-changer for establishing a solid dental hygiene routine with children. The light green giraffe and monkey design is incredibly charming and immediately turned what used to be a bedtime struggle into a fun activity that my child actually looks forward to. Having both the sonic toothbrush and the water flosser in one compact unit is brilliant, as it saves counter space while ensuring that every part of their mouth gets a professional-level clean. The three gentle flossing modes and two sonic brushing modes are perfectly calibrated for younger, more sensitive gums, providing a thorough clean without any discomfort. One of the standout features of this set is how braces-friendly it is; the water flosser reaches those tricky spots around wires and brackets that a standard toothbrush simply can't touch. It is clear that a lot of thought went into the ergonomics and the "fun factor," making it a perfect gift that is both practical and engaging. Since we started using this combo, our dentist has noticed a significant improvement in plaque removal and overall gum health. If you are looking for an all-in-one solution to build healthy brushing habits and make dental care feel like less of a chore, this set is worth every penny.

They Work!
Size: 60 Count (Pack of 1)
Thanks to my mouthrinse, I think, I have no issues with my teeth, gums, or breath, but cold air does inflame my sinuses, ETs, and ears. And I have to travel to cold places often. I hate that inflammation! As a classical singer, I really hate it! I have to keep my throat, sinuses, ETs and ears healthy. These probiotics have helped me to do just that. Previously, I tried prescription anti-inflammatories, and while they worked, anti-inflammatories can have undesirable side effects. I didn't experience any, but who knows? They could have been brewing. And I don't like chemical drugs. Much better to restore a healthy balance of bacteria in my upper respiratory system. These probiotics are so easy to take. I just let one dissolve in my mouth in the morning and one in the evening. I take them after breakfast, after brushing my teeth, and after brushing my teeth in the evening. It took a few weeks, but then I started seeing results. My sinuses were clearer, my ETs and ears would no longer close against the cold as they did previously. I no longer get the roaring in my right ear that I got when awakening due to sinus drainage. And I'm sure these probiotics are helping my teeth, gums, and breath even though I didn't really have any issues with them previously. If you decide to take these, and I highly recommend you do, be sure to let them dissolve or chew them slowly. To swallow them whole, which can be done easily, defeats their purpose since they are oral probiotics. And remember, these aren't probiotics for gut health. For that, you need a different probiotic mix, with different cultures. I do not refrigerate my probiotics, ever, and they remain potent. The taste is a light mint, and it's very agreeable. Not bad at all. Even if it were, the health benefits would definitely outweigh it. Bottom line: If you're experiencing any issues with your teeth, gums, breath, sinuses, throat, ETs, or ears, then these probiotics are for you! Try them! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, and greatly pleased, just like I was!

USED FOR SINUS ISSUES WITH GREAT SUCCESS
Size: 60 Count (Pack of 1)
Finally my 3 months of sinus congestion and cough are going away. My ears are also draining slowly too. This + oil pulling is helping with tooth sensitivity. Get this! I have struggled with sinus issues my entire life with brief breaks from problems. I have had easily over 80 antibiotic prescriptions in my life for ear infections, 7 ear surgeries for a non-cancerous tumor, sinus infections, strep, etc. Last year the sinus problems began again and I was becoming dependent on antibiotics (5 infections in 3 months). After researching and concluding the bacterial infections were secondary to a fungal infection, my doctor and I decided to use a Nystatin both orally and powdered form in my netipot, and this cured the problem. However I was misdiagnosed with lyme this summer and was on antibiotics for a month. I also got strep throat, leading to another week of antibiotics. The sinus problems returned. I would have gone back to that doctor for more nystatin, however, I moved so that primary care, who was amazing and listened to me and trusted my science background, was no longer an option for me to visit. So I began researching ways to overcome ENT problems naturally and this probiotic came up as a good choice for sinus and teeth issues (I have also been having severe tooth sensitivity). And I am happy to say it is working. Additionally I have been putting the juice of kimchi up my nostrils and in my ears. The latter resulting in my ears draining onto my pillows for the first few nights. I do not recommend Nystatin or any other fungal killer for that matter. After using Nystatin, I starting developing other problems like random joint and muscle pains, and I believe that is because the fungus was moving out of my intestines into the blood stream to escape the Nystatin (it has low absorption into the blood). I don't even recommend natural fungal killers like oil of oregano, pau d'arcco, neem, etc. I had been using for months and my intestinal candida was not improving. I truly recommend probiotics because biological control is always superior to chemical control. There is less chance for resistance since the organisms evolved together over millenia. Also building up diversity in your microbiome is hugely important. Get a good low-histamine probiotic to help with intestinal candida overgrowth and a good oral probiotic. If you think you have systemic candida, I recommend the book Killing Candida Sweetly. I have found it helpful. I have been attempting to follow the protocols, but even with my moderate adherence, it is working.
